Spring 1945, Ogden Utah. I was 5, Matty 11. Dad overseas. He built a tree fort. I was Supreme Cookie Tester. “You missed a spot!” I called. He leaned out. My jump rope held the branch. CRACK! Matty swung down, landed in Mama’s daffodils, petals in hair. “Matty, you broke the fort. But you’re a daffodil prince.” He laughed. I gave him a cookie. “Cookie medicine.” Mama frowned. I said, “He practiced falling like Daddy. I helped.” We ate cookies in the flowers. Fort ruined, but we had each other. Matty, my daffodil prince—thanks for every laugh. World misses you.
