Matthew's obituary

On Friday, October 25, 2019, Matthew David VanDuzor, loving son, partner to Lindsey Hawes and father to Eli Jackson VanDuzor went to be with his Lord. He was 40 years old.

Matt was born on October 16, 1979 in Tacoma WA to Dan VanDuzor and Signe (Reuhl) Verrill. After living briefly in Tacoma and then Bend, Oregon, the family moved to Bellevue Washington where Matt would spend the majority of his growing years. He graduated from Interlake High School in 1998. Matt LOVED sports and even though he played some football for the Saints, it was really baseball that was his favorite. He excelled at playing catcher for the Honda Select Team through his High School years and was even being scouted by the pros. It’s hard to imagine with his 6’4” and 230 lb. frame that he could even play that position, but he was fast and accurate!

After High School, instead of college, Matt opted to jump right into work. He held several very good jobs through the years at companies such as Datasphere and Daptiv but, something tells us that his job at “Hole in the Wall BBQ” when he was first setting out on his own was his all time favorite because he got to eat all the leftovers at the end of the night! Matt always loved good BBQ!

Other than his love of sports and BBQ, Matt also had a passion for music. He played guitar and had a lovely singing voice. His taste in music was as eclectic as anything you can imagine - all the way from Heavy Metal bands like Rage Against the Machine to James Taylor to Gospel. He just liked it all!

Matt was known for his infectious laugh, big broad smile, practical jokes and very kind heart. He has hundreds of friends who will no doubt miss his loving nature, the goofy fun he brought to any event but also the tender and caring person who truly listened to you and loved a good conversation.

Matt was preceded in death by his two grandfathers, Robert J. Reuhl, and John T. VanDuzor. He is survived by his soulmate Lindsey Hawes, his precious son Eli, his parents and step parents, Dan & Ellen VanDuzor and Signe & Gary Verrill, his 3 sisters, Megan Sterling (Hugh), Rachel & Olivia Verrill, his brother, Gary Ruston Verrill, and his two grandmothers, Thelma J. Reuhl and Karla J. VanDuzor. Matt was also blessed with 6 step-siblings, several cousins, aunts, uncles, a niece and nephew who will no doubt miss him at family gatherings especially during the holidays, his favorite time of the year.

A memorial service celebrating Matt’s life is scheduled for Saturday, November 9 at Creekside Covenant Church, 2315 173rd Ave. N.E., Redmond Washington at 3:00 pm. followed by a reception BBQ at the home of Gary & Signe Verrill in Maltby Washington. Directions will be provided at the service.

A Go Fund Me account has been set up in honor of Matt for Lindsey and Eli as they navigate their way through the coming months without their partner and Daddy. Anything you can give would be greatly appreciated.
