Matthew's obituary
Major Matthew Piazza, age 34, died unexpectedly on January 6, 2023, at Tripler Army Medical Center in Oahu, Hawaii.
Matt was born to Philip and Darlene Piazza and raised in Tully, New York alongside his brother Michael Piazza.
His passing leaves a large hole in the hearts of his family and friends who were always entertained by his stories and sense of humor; it was infectious. He lived life to the fullest and brought the life to any party.
He was beloved by everyone who met him; he was a fantastic father to his sons Bode and Lyle, a great husband to his wife Megan, and a best friend to many from all walks of life. No matter the circumstance, everyone who had the opportunity to spend time with him would leave with a story of something funny/crazy that Matty P. did.
If there was one thing Matt was, he was passionate about many things; his family, his country, the Joe Rogan podcast, and the way he tied his army boots, which Bode and Lyle loved to untie as soon as he came home from work, because they knew the fun parent had arrived to play. The list could go on and on but the unconditional love he had for Megan and their boys shined through his smile on a daily basis.
The Army took him on many adventures during the course of 11 years including: Savannah, GA; Richmond, VA; Colorado Springs, CO; Baldwinsville, NY, and most recently the island of Oahu, HI. This also included deployments to Afghanistan and Europe. This past summer he even got to experience Alaska for a couple of months. He always strived for the best results while in the Army and recently achieved promotion to Major. He might not have always done it by the book, but the Matt Piazza way got the job done.
Matt was an athlete from his early years of ski racing through playing lacrosse at VMI and most recently became an avid golfer. He had a bucket list of all the golf courses he was determined to play on Oahu and was making his way through the list. He always loved skiing and made several trips each year to the slopes. He had an upcoming trip planned so he could get away from the warm Hawaii weather this winter.
Anyone that knew Matt would expect nothing short of Red, White, and Blue with patriotic songs playing in the background. Matt was a true American Soldier, he wore his uniform proudly and he loved defending the good ‘ole USA.
A private family service will be held in Oahu on January 18th. A celebration of Matt's life will be scheduled at a later date this year upon the families return to the mainland.
