Matthew “Sonny” Joseph Nowakowski Sr., 74, passed away on December 21, 2025, in Chicago, Illinois. He was born on September 11, 1951, in Oak Park, Illinois, to Matthew Nowakowski and Stella Marie Gustello.

Matt is lovingly remembered by his wife, Cheryl Nowakowski; his son, Matthew Nowakowski Jr., and daughter-in-law Yolande; and his daughter, Marissa Dantos, and son-in-law Christian. His family was the heart of his world, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

Matt had a lifelong love for sports which was evident to all who knew him. Whether he was watching his favorite Chicago teams, cheering and coaching his children in their athletic endeavors, or playing a round of Golf with friends, sports brought him much happiness.

We take solace in knowing that Matt’s spirit lives on in the lives he touched. He had a passion for building relationships with people with an ability to turn strangers into friends through just a short conversation. As we move forward without his physical presence, we carry with us the joy and countless laughs that he brought into our lives. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. Rest in peace, Matt. Your story may have ended, but your impact will never fade.

A small private family service will be held to honor Matt’s life.
