Matt's obituary
Matthew Temple Childress
September 6, 1980 – October 3, 2025
Matthew Temple Childress, 45, passed away on October 3, 2025. Matthew was a master gas fitter for Riviera Utilities for many years, where he was respected for his dedication, skill, and strong work ethic.
Matthew had an incredible mind and a love for learning that never faded. He was a true music enthusiast with knowledge of just about every genre, and he could talk for hours about songs, artists, and albums. He read more books than most people could in a lifetime and was always eager to share what he learned. If you ever had a question, Matt almost always had an answer — and if he didn’t, he’d find one.
He loved animals, especially his cats, and found peace and meaning in nature. Beneath his quiet strength was a deeply sensitive soul who cared profoundly for others.
Matthew faced many personal challenges and struggled with mental health in recent years. Though his passing was by suicide, his life was so much more than the pain that took him. He will be remembered for his humor, his curiosity, and the kindness he showed to the people and animals who shared his world.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Mary (Temple) Childress. He is survived by his siblings Dusty (Beth) Childress, Virginia Leigh Childress, Tom (Laurie) Childress, and Lynn Bouressa; his loving partner, Sunshine Petry; his daughter, Katherine Childress; and his stepdaughters Hope, Faith, and Grace Petry.
Matthew’s spirit will live on in the laughter, music, and memories he shared with those who loved him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
In honor of Matthew’s memory, his family encourages compassion for those who struggle with mental health and reminds anyone in pain that help is available.
