Matthew's obituary

Matthew Brannon Blackwell passed away unexpectedly at his home in Liverpool, New York on December 29, 2024, at the age of 41. He was born in Montgomery, Alabama on August 18, 1983.

After graduating high school in Washington state, Matthew proudly served in the United States Army from 2005 until 2017, receiving the rank of Staff Sergeant. His military career took him to various parts of the world, including tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan as a UAV operator, earning numerous commendations.

Following his military service, Matthew became a drone pilot for Causey Aviation Unmanned in Syracuse, New York. He was also continuing his education at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where he was recognized as an exemplary student exceeding criteria for membership in the National Society of Leadership and Success.

In his spare time, Matthew enjoyed fishing, woodworking, hiking, camping, grilling, and watching sports, especially his beloved University of Alabama football team and the Seattle Mariners baseball team. His love for sports was only surpassed by his love for his three children.

Matthew is survived by his parents, Gary Blackwell (Angie) and Shari Wheeler (Jim); his children, Brannon, Cole, and Kylie; Cole and Kylie’s mother, Brenda Lynn Blackwell, grandmother, Sherry “Nana” Cumbee; his siblings, Macy Blackwell Graben (Clay), Mandy Jones Johnson (Adrian), and Spencer Wheeler; aunts, Kim Fuller Henderson, Lisa Cumbee Miaoulis (Billy), Angie Blackwell Pentz, as well as many other family members, Army brothers, and friends.

Predeceased family members include his grandparents, Joseph “Papaw” Fuller , Joyce “Nana” Fuller, John “Granddaddy” Blackwell, Freddie “Grandma” Blackwell, and Robert “Big B” Cumbee , as well as Uncle Drake Blackwell, Aunt Cathy Chessher, and Aunt Kay Markham.
