Mathew's obituary
Mathew Teal Jobin passed away in a tragic backcountry skiing accident at Spray Lakes on May 5, 2025 at 28 years old. Mathew loved the outdoors and was an avid skier, hiker, and camper. He described Kananaskis Country as “home” and took every opportunity to experience the wilderness with family, friends, and the adventuring community.
Mathew (Mattie/Mat/Jobes/Jobin) was born in Calgary on October 14, 1996 at the Foothills Hospital. He was a mischievous child who hated pants but loved to push boundaries playing with his parents, Neil and Kim, brothers, Alex (Alexander) and Kai (Malakai), and grandfather, Don. Mat’s passion for sports developed early with carpet and alley hockey and evolved into organized youth hockey; at the time of his passing, he played on two hockey teams.
Mathew attended Parkdale and Briar Hill elementary schools before moving on to Queen Elizabeth Junior/Senior high school. Mat was an excellent student and earned good grades. He was also exceptionally well-liked by peers and staff alike, and developed many close and lifelong friendships. Mat loved listening to music, and frequently shared the joy that it brought him with his friends and family. Throughout his school years he continued his love of sports: playing hockey, soccer, and volleyball.
Mattie earned his Bachelor of Engineering Science with distinction at Western University in 2018. At Western, he was active in the Baja Racing team where he designed, built and raced off-road vehicles for Baja SAE competitions. After his first year, he moved off campus with several fellow engineering students. They not only supported each other through school, but forged tight friendships (and had a few parties along the way). His parents, both engineers themselves, travelled to Ontario to “ring him in” as an Engineer upon his graduation.
After earning his degree, Mat worked at TC Energy. He was a master of work/life balance, often taking his end of work calls on the way to a hike or a ski. It was during this period where his love of the outdoors and wilderness flourished and he matured into a confident and knowledgeable outdoorsman. He met his beloved partner Stephanie with whom he shared a beautiful and tender relationship.
Throughout his life, Mathew met and made an impression on many people. With his easy smile and laugh, one of his true gifts was making others feel comfortable. He was a notorious jokester, and his quick wit often left everyone in stitches. He possessed a sharp intellect and a curious mind. He was remarkably kind and thoughtful while being unapologetically and confidently himself. He pursued his interests fully and passionately. Mattie is survived by many good friends, teammates, coworkers, fellow outdoor enthusiasts, and close family members. Stephanie, Neil, Kim, Don, Kai, Alex, and Kailey survive their dearly loved and incredibly missed partner, son, grandson and brother.
Mattie – we love you and will miss you forever.
In lieu of flowers we ask you make a donation in Mathew’s name to the Avalanche Canada Foundation, who help to support backcountry safety for adventurers.
