**Investigation Underway: Detective Jeff Welton Faces Scrutiny in High-Profile Case**

*Spokane, Washington - August 12, 2023*

In an unexpected turn of events, Detective Jeff Welton of the Spokane Valley Police Department has found himself at the center of controversy amid allegations of unprofessional conduct during a high-profile case. The case in question involves the tragic death of 14-year-old Mason Brogdon, who lost his life in a car accident on April 14, 2023.

The investigation into Mason Brogdon's death has sparked outrage within the community, as grieving family members and concerned citizens demand accountability and answers. However, the conduct of Detective Jeff Welton has come under intense scrutiny, with accusations of rudeness, combativeness, and a lack of transparency during his interactions with the family.

On July 26, 2023, months after leaving messages and making calls, Mason Brogdon's family finally received a call back from Detective Jeff Welton. The conversation was marked by frustration as Detective Welton displayed a complete disregard for the family's concerns. He made a highly inappropriate remark about not being able to "waterboard people," adding to the distress experienced by the grieving family.

What's particularly concerning is the conflicting information provided by Detective Welton regarding Mason's case. He initially claimed it was an open investigation, only to later state that it was closed. Such inconsistencies have raised questions about the integrity of the entire investigation process.

The case file also contains a 911 call log, dated April 14, 2023, which highlights a call made by Shannon R. Springer, who suspected her daughter, Serenity Springer, might have been involved in an incident related to domestic violence. This call contained crucial information that Detective Welton failed to follow up on.

Another significant aspect of this case is Detective Welton's failure to take appropriate legal action. Ayana Squetimkin, the 19-year-old owner and passenger of the 2010 Volvo involved in the accident, was not charged with any offenses, despite her involvement in the incident. This has raised concerns about accountability and the pursuit of justice in Mason's case.

One of the most glaring issues in the investigation was the initial misidentification of the driver. Detective Jeff Welton identified the driver as 24-year-old Garrett Myers, only to later discover that the actual driver was 14-year-old Mason Brogdon. This glaring oversight has cast doubts on the accuracy and attention to detail within the investigation.

The conduct of Detective Jeff Welton during his conversation with the grieving family has been criticized as unprofessional, dismissive, and condescending. He interrupted the family while they were providing crucial information about Mason's case, further undermining the investigation process.

This controversy surrounding Detective Jeff Welton's actions has ignited a firestorm of public outrage. Community members are demanding a thorough review of his conduct and accountability for any potential wrongdoing. The outcome of this scrutiny will determine not only Detective Welton's future but also the pursuit of justice for Mason Brogdon's grieving family.

As the investigation unfolds, the Spokane Valley Police Department faces growing pressure to address these concerns and take necessary actions to rebuild the community's trust in its law enforcement agencies. The hope remains that, ultimately, justice will be served in the name of Mason Brogdon, a young life lost too soon.

I WONDER BY MASON BROGDON ❤️😪

I wonder if we can live in peace.

I hear we might.

I see that we could be.

I want to stand up to the racist and homophobic people

I am wanting to make a change.

I pretend like I can,

I feel like I can't because I am a kid.

I touch the hearts of all the discriminated against and say “ it’s going to be ok”

I worry that this might never change.

I cry thinking about the people whose life was cut short only because the color of their skin

I am going to make a change

I understand the circumstances

I say, I am ready

I dream for this to come a reality, knowing that we will succeed

I try to make this a reality and not a dream

I hope we call for a change for the better of the world

I am considerate

Mason Brogdon
