Maryanne's obituary
Maryanne was born on her mother's birthday in Glendale, California on May 16, 1940. She was named after her mother, Mary Anne Connolly Tierney of Co. Cavan, Ireland. Her father was Gilbert Paul Tierney of Rolla, Missouri.
Maryanne grew up in the Los Angeles area, but spent a year in Limerick, Ireland and a year in Little Rock, Arkansas when she was a teenager. Prior to buying a home in San Marcos, she lived in Vista for more than 20 years. She worked for the County for 17 years in the Dept. of Revenue and Recovery, and was an active member of SEIU.
In her youth, Maryanne was a competitive artistic and speed skater who never lost a race. She continued to skate into her 70s with her daughter and granddaughter. Maryanne also enjoyed bowling, Bingo, gardening, and charity walks. She loved cars and owned about 26 of them throughout her life. Maryanne also loved animals, and they loved her. After she retired, she worked at the Wild Animal Park.
Maryanne was known for helping people in need, and encouraging addicts. The year she died, she celebrated 32 years of sobriety and 20 years without a cigarette. Maryanne was also known for her humor and strength, which helped her and her family face her terminal diagnosis. She made the most out of the time she had left, checking off all her bucket-list items with her daughter and granddaughter.
Maryanne was also a loyal blood donor, having given 17 gallons, until she was diagnosed with cancer and had to stop. She wanted people to give in her place so the San Diego Blood Bank held a memorial blood drive in her honor. The goal was to match the 136 pints Maryanne gave in her lifetime. Her goal was reached but you can still give in Maryanne's name by using code M136 when you donate. See http://tinyurl.com/136Pints
Maryanne not only gave of herself in life but in death, donating her body to science in hopes she could help researchers find a cure for lung disease. A fundraiser has also been set up in Maryanne's name through the American Lung Association at http://tinyurl.com/lunglove
