Mary Tornese, a beautiful, strong and talented woman, devoted to her family, has left us with so many fond memories. Graduating from Fashion Institute of New York in the late 40’s, her goal was to become a fashion illustrator for New York publications. Given Mary’s inherent need for perfection, she wasn’t able to draw quickly enough to make this goal work. She turned her talent to dress designing. Mary moved from Brooklyn, NY, to River Edge, NJ, with her beloved husband, Al, and their two daughters in the early 50's. Over the years, she always found a way to contribute to her family, including delivering telegrams to 3 towns surrounding River Edge. Mary spent most of her years in River Edge, where she contributed to her community as president of the American Legion Post 226, a member of the Volunteer Ambulance Core, designed and created the uniforms for the River Edge Auxiliary, Girl Scout Troop Leader, and VA Hospital, Paramus, volunteer. For fun, she loved to swim, her father was a Coney Island lifeguard, bowl on a River Edge bowling league and dance up a storm at social events. Everyone who knows Mary will remember Sunday’s, where Mary cooked up a big pot of sauce with the best meatballs in the world, family gathered around and ate from early afternoon to evening. Mary leaves her brother, Emanuel (Matt), her two daughters, Diane and Janet, four grandchildren, Alex, Tanya, Lauren and Alexis and six great grandchildren, Vivi, Gen, Angelina, Dianna, Ruby and Miles.
