Mary's obituary
Mary Lou Szatkiewicz, a beloved mother, environmental advocate, political enthusiast, and music lover, was born on February 5, 1944, in Beckley, West Virginia, and peacefully passed away on February 15, 2026. Her life was a vibrant tapestry of shared laughter, cherished memories, and steadfast advocacy. Mary’s love for life and the people in it was as vibrant and welcoming as her favorite color, yellow.
Mary is survived by her son, Jason Szatkiewicz, who is the man he is today because of his mother and the ideals she instilled in him. She is also survived by her sister, Linda, and her cherished grandchildren: Edison, Nora, Natalie, and Nicholas, who brought her great joy and pride. Her husband, James “Jim” Szatkiewicz, daughter, Kristin Byrnes, and brother, William, preceded her in death. Mary will now join them in peaceful rest at Hillside Upper Cemetery in Issaquah, Washington.
Mary had an eclectic taste in music. From the soulful tones of Van Morrison to the smooth melodies of Tony Bennett, music was her sanctuary, and she loved sharing meaningful songs with friends and coworkers. The festive sounds of the Hallelujah Chorus in church during the holidays held a special place in her heart—she loved the power of it and the way it moved her. Classical music also brought her great joy. As a teenager, her son Jason took her on several mother-son outings to see the Seattle Symphony, memories he will always treasure.
Her love for rhythm and performance extended to the arts and traditions she enjoyed watching, including ice skating, the Olympics, and the Westminster Dog Show. Mary also loved gathering around the kitchen table—known in the house as “Smokey Joe’s”—to play board games with her grandchildren or her husband of 50 years, Jim. Scrabble, dominoes, and bingo nights were favorite pastimes that brought laughter and togetherness. Mary had a remarkable way with words, which made her a formidable Scrabble opponent; few could compete.
The kitchen was also one of Mary’s happiest places. Her homemade spaghetti sauce was legendary in the family and always a favorite with her grandchildren, who eagerly looked forward to those meals together.
Mary also enjoyed classic television. She loved the family-centered storytelling of The Waltons and the rich characters of Downton Abbey. The Waltons especially reminded her of her Southern upbringing in West Virginia. She often fell asleep to its familiar stories, which felt like a small piece of home.
Travel was another joy in Mary’s life. She loved the beauty of Hawaii and treasured cruises, particularly through Europe and to Alaska. She also made many meaningful trips to visit her sister in Florida and extended family in Indiana. These travels created lasting memories with her family and allowed her to experience new places, cultures, and connections that enriched her life.
Among her many passions, Mary’s greatest dedication was to causes she believed in. She spent her career in social work advocating for the welfare of children and remained deeply committed to environmental protection and human rights. She followed politics closely, always guided by a deep sense of justice and compassion. Her lifelong work to help others and protect the world around her is a legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew her.
Mary Szatkiewicz lived a life defined by warmth, generosity, and conviction. Her presence, stories, and kindness will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to live on through the memories she created and the love she gave so freely.
