Mary's obituary

Mary Irene Stojak (1952–2025)

On Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, Mary Irene Stojak, daughter of Donald and Gloria Glennie, peacefully passed away at the age of 72, leaving behind a life rich in love, laughter, and intellectual pursuits. She is survived by her devoted sons, Brian and Peter, as well as her cherished grandchildren, Stephen, Elanor, Madalynn, and Brayden. She will be deeply missed by her daughter-in-law Kristina and future daughter-in-law Abigale, along with her siblings Elizabeth (Lisanne), Donald (Lach), and James along with many more friends and family whose lives she touched.

Mary called Maryland home for many years, residing in Reisterstown since 2005 and, before that, in Eldersburg since 1989. Her journey, however, began in the Midwest, where she spent her early years in Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa and a brief amount of time in Minnesota, having been born in Evergreen Park, Illinois.

A dedicated scholar, Mary pursued academic excellence throughout her life. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisonsin-Eau Claire and went on to achieve two Master’s degrees—one from University of Iowa and another from Johns Hopkins University in 2007. Her passion for knowledge led her to serve over 25 years in the Federal Government, contributing her expertise to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Upon retiring, Mary embraced her creative side, turning to writing as a profession. She found joy in sharing her stories, attending conferences, and engaging with fellow writers across the country. Travel was another of her great loves, and she explored far and wide, from Key West for a writing convention in early 2025 to a treasured trip to Egypt with her son Peter in 2019.

Mary had a deep passion for art that permeated every aspect of her life. She wasn't just an admirer of beauty—she had a remarkable ability to create it. Whether she was painting vivid landscapes, sculpting intricate designs, or capturing a moment with her camera, her creativity seemed limitless.

Music was a lifelong passion for Mary. A gifted flute player, she performed with a local flute quartet, symphonic bands, and many more, bringing harmony and beauty to those around her. Her love for life was evident in her generosity, her laughter, and the warmth she shared with family, friends, and her beloved pets. Mary was also an avid fan of Chicago and Baltimore sports, and her tradition of celebrating Mother’s Day at Camden Yards was a beloved ritual.

In her later years, she delighted in spending time with loved ones, playing Mahjongg, Bridge, and Bingo, creating moments of joy and connection. Mary’s vibrant presence, unwavering kindness, and intellectual curiosity touched everyone fortunate enough to know her.

She will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who loved her.

Mary wished to be cremated and laid to rest in Missouri Valley. To celebrate her life, a memorial will be held Saturday, May 3rd, 2025, at 1213 Uniontown Rd, Westminster, MD, 21158, with visiting hours from 12 pm to 3 pm. Her burial will be privately held at a later date.
