Mary's obituary
Mary Louise Schlatt nee Woc, also know as Mania Alacia (in Polish), was born August 16, 1929 in Crabapple, Ohio. Her parents Joseph and Victoria Woc, immigrated to the U.S. from Poland when they were teenagers. Mary's father, Joseph, passed in 1953 and her mother, Victoria, resided in her Crabapple home until she died in 1978. Mary remained a support to her mom throughout her remaining years, visiting frequently with 6 children in tow.
Mary had 7 siblings, losing her youngest brother, Walter, in WWII. Her southern Ohio upbringing was very humble. She and her future husband were childhood friends. They married in 1948 after John returned home from Japan and move to Kent, Ohio where he attended University . Mary did housework and provided assistance to the family they lived with during his college years.
Over the next 10 years, Mary had 6 children; Adrienne, Victoria, the twins- Karen and Kevin, Brian and Susan. As children, Mary outfitted us (with great pride) in dresses she occasionally sewed and the brothers looked equally as dapper. Mom always kept a beautiful and very tidy home. There were many moves due to her husband, John's work. She particularly enjoyed living in Singapore and brought a houseful of Asian treasures back to the states on their return.
When Mary and John moved to California in 1978, there were many fun weekends around the poolside with family and friends. During this time, Mary attended art classes at the community college and she worked at a gift shop . She was in her element! Mary collected paperweights. She loved to sing and dance, was always stylishly dressed and adorned in jewelry regardless of the occasion. The family holiday feasts of stuffed cabbage, perogies and kielbasa were eagerly anticipated and the tradition carries on with her children.
Mary and John were fortunate to have many travel adventures over their years together-Bahamas, Germany, Poland, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Panama Canal, Canada and all over the United States.
The last 20+ years of Mary's life were spent in Redding, California with frequent visits from her children and she enjoyed time with neighborhood friends. She was entertained by the hummingbirds, and the variety of roses planted in their garden. After her husband, John, passed Sept 29, 2019, Mary was remained in her home until late in 2024, at which time she required more assistance than the family could provide. Mary joined her husband, her mother and father, siblings and friends in the heavens on March 6, 2025.
Mary had 9 grandchildren: Nick and Kevin (Adrienne), Jesse and Ben (Victoria), Ryan and Grant (Karen), Tyler(Brian), Jenna and Melissa (Susan). She also had great grandchildren: Tyson, Cameron, Mia, Calvin, Robbie (Adrienne), and Dean(Karen). Mary's sense of humor and interest in their lives was truly appreciated. She enjoyed them immensely.
We all miss her beautiful smile, her funny sayings, her humor, and are grateful for her love, support and silliness.
