Mary's obituary

Mary Reeves was born in High Falls, North Carolina on Sept 11, 1948 and lived a full & faithful life.

Born to Willie & Pearl Reeves, Mary was the 2nd to youngest of 7 siblings. 6 girls and 1 boy.

Mary spent her formative years in High Falls, North Carolina where she graduated from college. She moved to New Jersey and worked at the Essex Public Library. In 1968, her greatest gift, her only son, Lamont was born. After 8 yrs working at AT&T in New Jersey, Mary chose to provide a safer community for her son, so she moved herself and Lamont to Inglewood, California in 1980.

In 1983, Mary was diagnosed with sarcoidosis, an inflammatory disease characterized by the formation of tiny clumps of immune cells, that can develop in any organ, most commonly the lungs and lymph nodes. She was given 6 months to live as her prognosis for the disease. Mary immediately made changes for herself and Lamont, allowing her close friends, Marge & Ron Sheridan to adopt her son. Mary wanted to ensure if anything happened to her, Lamont would be taken good care of and began her self healing journey.

Lamont found his faith at age 16, at Christian Chapel In Walnut, CA and invited his Mom to join him. She willingly accepted the invitation and from that point forward, she lived an incredibly blessed and faithful life with God. Mary was best known for her laugh, her passion and love for people. She always had a loving and welcoming spirit to all those she met.

Despite the doctor's prognosis , Mary beat all the odds and followed her passion to help and be there for others. She served as a Missionary for several years, spending time in Guinea-Bissau, a country in West Africa, and Rio, Brazil serving others and ministering the Gospel.

Mary was truly God’s good and faithful servant. Through her vegan lifestyle, she far exceeded the life expectancy the doctors gave her and remained strong in her Faith and through her fierce love for her son and her loving, solid relationships with God and her Church Family, Mary beat the odds and embraced life milestones for each of her 3 grandsons and always participated or coordinated acts of love & kindness. Mary loved karaoke with friends & family; potlucks, teas and gatherings with her church & friends and cooking vegan meals for herself and all to enjoy. She found the best vegan ice creams and treats across the San Fernando valley.

Mary was first diagnosed in 1983 and by changing her diet, having a better understanding of her condition and various treatment plans & medicines, she shared her love and God’s light to others for another 43 years. We were blessed to have Mary in our lives and her spirit will be missed by all who knew her and came into her life, she has many friends that became family. Mary is survived by her youngest sister Debra; her only loving son, Lamont Reeves; her 3 grandchildren, William, Jamal & Aaron, her adopted granddaughter Erica and her spunky dog, Jax.
