Mary's obituary

On Wednesday morning, January 31, 2024, Mary Virginia Pollard moved to her Heavenly home at the wonderful age of 100. Mary loved the Lord and her family. She set a lasting example for all who came after her; one that will benefit them all their lives.

Born on October 14, 1923 in Clarksburg, WV, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Aaron Hill and the late Beulah Elizabeth Hill (Bartlett). In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by three siblings, Louis Hill, Paul Hill, and Ruth Hill. She is survived by her brother Thomas Hill.

Mary and her husband, Santo Joseph Pollard were married in 1951 and went on to have one child, David Hill Pollard. David married Sue and together they had Mary's Grandchildren, Deanna and Thomas (Sherman). Mary was also a loving great-grandmother to her four great-grandchildren, Hayden, Delaney, Greyson and Everly.

Mary loved her Savior, the Lord Jesus, with all her heart, and she loved God’s Word. She was a prayer warrior and only heaven knows the impact her strong and consistent prayer life has had on her family and friends.

Mary cared deeply for those in her life. She demonstrated her love by cooking extravagant *healthy* meals,  passing on knowledge, singing and reading stories to her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sweet and memorable phone calls, and LONG hand-written letters. She had a green thumb in the garden and in the kitchen.

Mary would be the first to tell you her life wasn't easy when she was young. She was a sinner just like any other. But she found Jesus and grew in wisdom and grace. By the end of her life, she overflowed with joy, faithfulness, and love for her Heavenly Father. In the last days before her death, she sat in her bed and beautifully sang "Jesus Loves Me". Yes, He does love you, Mary.  The following was found in one of her many journals, written in her hand:

"In my undisciplined life of hypocrisy, ultra-ignorance, and need to control... I was a total wreck, blind to my own destructive ways, but God heard my cry to be cleansed, to be made whole, that I might be able to receive (His) love. I fell in His open arms and haven't left. That was in 2002 at age 79. I don't deserve the least of His blessings, when on the cross, He (Jesus) suffered agony for me in my place. I will forever be thankful and desire to express joy in Jesus my Saviour, Lord and God, full of mercy and truth."

The family would like to extend special appreciation to many nurses and aides at The Hospice Home who helped to make her final days peaceful and comfortable. For those wishing to make memorial contributions, the family would like to you consider Authora Care Collective (specify The Hospice Home) at 914 Chapel Hill Rd. Burlington, NC 27215.
