Obituary Mary-Pat Cook

Mary-Pat Cook, a retired women and children’s advocate and political activist, died peacefully Wednesday, August 3 after several weeks in hospice care. She was 83 and lived in New Bern, North Carolina.

She worked at the YMCA women’s shelter in Anne Arundel Co. Md., and regularly attended court proceedings as a lay advocate for women and/or children appearing before the court.

She spent 20 years in Bel Air, Md and was active in Harford County politics. She was County office manager for Senator Paul Sarbanes’ first senatorial campaign and worked with other progressive Harford County Democratic campaigns. She was a founding member of the Fountain Green Community Association.

Mary-Patricia King was born in Tenafly, N.J., and was adopted by John H. and Mildred King (née Joyce) of Mast Hope, Pa. She attended college at Green Mountain College as well as studies at the Katherine Gibbs school. Her 1959 marriage to Russell A Cook, Jr. of Bel Air, Md. ended in divorce.

She enjoyed gardening and was known to produce fine herbs that she shared with family, friends and neighbors. She was an avid bird watcher and loved all creatures great and small with a particular fondness for wolves. Later in life she practiced gourmet cooking.

She is survived by a daughter, Laurie Cook of Catonsville, Md.; two sons, Christopher Cook of Bethesda, Md and John Cook of Incline Village, Nev, and a grand-daughter Charlotte Cook of Bethesda.

Her family is planning a private ceremony and asks that any donations honoring her be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
