Mary Lynda's obituary
Mary Lynda Moon, 93, a longtime resident of Beloit, WI, passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL, after a long battle with dementia and stroke.
Lynda was born in Chicago, IL, spending the majority of her childhood between Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Mauston, WI. She earned her BS in Education at UW-Platteville, where she met her beloved husband, Richard “Dick” Moon.
Dick and Lynda were married Aug 23, 1952. After living briefly in South Carolina and Madison, they settled in Beloit where they were residents for over 65 years. Lynda’s passion and career was being an Elementary School Teacher. She taught at various schools in Columbia, South Carolina, Madison, Wisconsin, Clwyd, Wales, and Beloit. Lynda earned her Master’s in Reading Education at UW-Whitewater and was a strident advocate for children’s reading skill development throughout her life.
A devoted member of Beloit United Methodist Church, Lynda sang in the choir for over 5 decades. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, swimming and doing aquarobics at Beloit's YMCA, traveling, reading, and volunteering her time with multiple educational organizations including the Beloit Public Library board of directors where she served for over 10 years. She taught disadvantaged preschoolers for twelve years in the Headstart Program. One of her enduring legacies is SLU, the Society for Learning Unlimited at Beloit College, of which she and her husband Dick were founding organizers.
Survivors include her Son, R. David Moon and Wife Andrea; Granddaughter, Sarah Moon and Husband Dan; Grandson Ben Moon and Wife Emily; Great-Grandchildren Aspen, Aquinnah, Mira, Bodhi, and Abigail.
Lynda was predeceased by her husband Dick, parents Rollin and Florence Hutchins, and her elder sister Miriam Hutchins.
