Mary's obituary

In loving memory of our mother, Mary Louise Milbrath, who passed away on February 05, 2023 in Mercer Island, WA.  Mary was born on July 16, 1940 in Fennimore, WI to Donald and Adeline Roethe.  She graduated from Capital University in 1962 with a degree in education.   She embarked on a long teaching career, started in Nyssa, OR and substituting for years in Portland, OR.  She went on to teach Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade before retiring  from Portland Public Schools.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Don and Adeline Roethe, brothers Tom and Robert, brother-in-law Ron Gratz, nephew Ed Gratz, and her beautiful son Michael Scott Milbrath.  She was the loving mother of John Milbrath, Rachel (Milbrath) Stricker, and Amy Milbrath and the grandmother of Benjamin, Emily, Ashlynn, Stella and Evan.  She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Tanya Milbrath, son-in-law David Stricker, Damien Rasmussen, her sister Jean Gratz, nephew Eric Gratz, wife Mariah, and their children Chase and Evie.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Our mother was a kind, caring, and giving person who always had a smile on her face and looked at the bright side of life.  She was a source of great joy to her friends, and she will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives she touched.  Besides being a teacher and lifelong learner, our mother was an artist (particularly painting and pottery), enjoyed piano and organ, scrapbooking, gardening, and was an avid traveler.  Cannon Beach, OR and Paris, France were her favorite places.  She was a longstanding season ticket holder to the Portland Symphony.  Her faith in God and love of church followed her throughout her lifetime.  Mom also adored her home and all of her special neighbors.

The celebration of our sweet mom’s life will be held at her house on Saturday July 15, 2023 from 2pm - 5pm.  In lieu of flowers, please bring a favorite story to share about our mom.

Mom, you will always be in our hearts, and we will never forget you. We love you so much. Rest in peace.
