Mary's obituary

Mary Ruth McGowan, 82, of Gretna, LA, passed away on March 25, 2023. She was born on December 16, 1940, in Utica, MS to the late Phillip Green, Sr., and Lula Mae Crawford Green.

Mary was a loving mother and a wonderful friend. She was always willing to help anyone in need and had a contagious spirit that could make a rainy day shine. Although she wasn't formally working, many knew her as the "CandyLady," and will remember her for her kindness and generosity.

Mary attended West Jefferson High School and was a faithful member of New Hope Baptist Church. She loved singing, praising God, helping children, and cooking.

Mary is survived by her children: Mark Anthony (Lacern) McGowan, Qulwayna I. Turner, Jr., Sylvia (Alexander) Harley, Kimberly (Anthony) Nash, Marcy McGowan, and the late Marchell Alejandro Ray and Amos Lee. She was the sister of Lucille (James) Harris, Octavia (Lue Gene) Moffett, Katie (Calvin) Miles, Jeanette (Cortez) Thompson, Pearlie (Matt) Griffin, Luvonne (John) Hunter, Patricia (Christopher) Dixon, Priscilla, George, and Edward Green, and the late Phillip (Wilma) Green, Jr., Freddie (Mary) Lee, and Eddie Lee. She was the godmother of Charles Williams and is also survived by a host of grandchildren (Cierra M. Scott, Darrion McGowan, Imari A. Shorter, Greg McGowan, and Justin "JR" Scott), devoted family, and friends.

Mary Ruth's service is set to be held on April 2, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Davis Mortuary, 230 Monroe St. Gretna, Louisiana 70053. At this time, the family is not accepting donations.
