Peggy's obituary

Mary Margaret “Peggy” Manar, 83, was born September 27, 1937, in Oklahoma City, OK, to Andy O. and Margaret Campbell. She passed away October 7, 2020, in Chickasha, OK. Peggy graduated from Classen High School, OKC, in 1955. She attended the University of Oklahoma from 1956 to 1957 where she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority and Homecoming Queen candidate in 1957.
Peggy married Tom J. Manar of Apache, OK, on June 15, 1957, at the First Presbyterian Church in OKC. Tom and Peggy met at OU where Tom was also a student. In 1959 the couple moved to Apache where they raised three children, Jeff, Melissa, and Marsha.
During her first 25 years in Apache, Peggy concentrated on raising her children. As a mom, there was none better. She was always willing to sacrifice and do whatever it took to make sure her children were taken care of. During those early years in Apache close friendships were formed with several families who they traveled and celebrated life with for many years.
Peggy was always supportive and generous with many organizations. Over the years she was an active member of the Apache community. When her kids were younger, she was a Camp Fire Girl and a Cub Scout leader. She was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Apache Sewing Club, JayCee Janes, Red Hat Society, Apache Study Club, and Apache Historical Society. She helped in the establishment of the Apache Public Library, volunteered annually at the Rattlesnake Festival, and supported Apache Public Schools in numerous ways. Peggy received the Apache Town Treasure Award in 2012.
She was an amazing wife, mother and grandmother. She left college to support Tom and herself when they first got married, so that he could continue his education. Later she supported Tom’s political career for over 10 years while he served in the Oklahoma House of Representatives. She never complained about his absence when he was in session and even spearheaded his campaigns. She took up the reins in the bank serving as Chairman of the Board after Tom’s death in 1992 until 2000, as well as taking over his cattle operations for many years until she got tired of lifting feed sacks. As a mother and grandmother, she never missed an opportunity to cheer on her children and grandchildren whether it be athletic events, theatre productions, choral performances, or attending graduations and ceremonies of all kinds.
A few of her favorite hobbies were caring for her pets, collecting frog themed décor, and tending to her flower beds. In her spare time, she enjoyed fishing, and going to the theatre, the rodeo, and OU football games.
Peggy’s faith was a very important part of her life. She was a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church of Apache, and for many years she gave her time and talents to various church activities including UMW, Choir, fundraising events, and children and youth ministries. She loved to sing hymns. They were a consistent source of encouragement to her, even in her latest years. What a peace it is to know that she now resides in full health, with the Lord, continuing to praise his Amazing Grace.
Peggy is survived by her daughter, Melissa Burgan and her husband Steve of Norman, OK; daughter, Marsha Cook of Elgin, OK; sister, Ann Erwin and husband Bill of Chickasha, OK; brother Andy “Bud” Campbell and wife Karen of Durant, OK; and six grandchildren; Field Manar, Mitchell Manar, Kali (Cook) Thomas, Aubry Burgan, Kaden Cook, and Chase Burgan.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Tom Manar, her son, Jeff Manar, and her parents, Andy and Margaret Campbell.
