Werre, of Monango, ND, will be Friday, December 20, 2024, at 1:00 PM at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 9018 ND Hwy 1, Oakes, ND with Gabe Krause officiating. Family Interment will be at Oakes View Cemetery, 8834 112th Ave SE, Oakes, with Kyle Devine presiding. Memorial luncheon to be held at Growing Small Towns, 510 Main Ave, Oakes.

Mary Louise Mills (“Louise”) was born on October 3, 1943, in Pierre, SD, to Laurance and Elda (Brewe) Mills. She lived the first twelve years of her life on a ranch near Hayes, SD, where she attended country school through the 6th grade. In 1955, she moved with her family to a farm north of Monango, ND. Louise graduated from Monango High School with the Class of 1961. Louise was united in marriage to Darrel Werre of Monango on October 7, 1961, at her sister Evelyn Richter’s house in Merricourt, ND, who, along with her husband, Earl, were also her attendants. They made their home in Fargo, ND off and on over the years, as well as Lynwood, CA for the years up to when their daughter Melody started kindergarten, and finally, Monango, where they lived for the next several decades. During this time, all eight of their children were born: Melody, Carolyn, Dauna, JoAnne (nka “Jo”), Diane, Brandon, Crystal, and Alyssa. Prior to expanding their large family, Louise worked for a time as a nurse’s aide (“candy striper”), telephone operator, and a secretary before becoming a full-time farmwife and mother of 8. For about the first 5 years of marriage, Darrel and Louise worked during the planting and harvesting seasons and lived just 1 mile east of Monango with her brother- and sister-in-law, Dennis and Kay Werre in the “old Wahu house”. Then they wintered between Fargo and Lynwood. After about 1966, they eventually established their home on a year-round basis 8 miles north of Monango, settling on the “William Conrad farm”, which is where they lived for more than the next ½ century or so preceding her death.

Louise was a lady of many talents, including playing piano, harmonica, and accordion, as well as sewing, canning, and cake-decorating. She was best known for her coffee cakes, cheesecakes, pies, homemade bread/buns, pickles, jams, jellies, and other baked goods; her beautiful quilts; her love of music; and her rather massive gardens. In high school, she loved playing basketball, cheerleading, and baton-twirling (which she kept her entire life!). She was a very devoted and loyal worshipper of Jehovah, to whom she dedicated her life as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on January 12, 1963, in Long Beach, CA, and enjoyed attending their meetings, assemblies, and conventions, and participating in the volunteer ministry work on a regular basis, alongside her children and throngs of many friends. She thoroughly enjoyed visiting her children and grandchildren and traveling the world.

Louise peacefully passed away at home on December 10, 2024. She was 81 years old. She fought a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer during her remaining few months. With the help of Hospice of the Red River Valley, she was able to spend her last days at home surrounded by her family.

Appreciative to have been part of her life: her husband, Darrel of 63 years; seven daughters: Melody (Jeff) Barnes of Groveland, FL; Carolyn (Frank) Sepe and Dauna (Chris) Ackerland, both of West Fargo, ND; Jo (Troy) Nece of Phoenix, AZ; Diane (Brian) Eggen and Crystal (Jon) Kowal, both of Minnetrista, MN; and Alyssa (Hans) Schommer of Enderlin, ND; one son, Brandon (Julie) Werre of Ellendale, ND; twelve grandchildren: Laura Anderson; Derrick (Kelly) Barnes; Ryah (Ryan) Scott; Emma Ackerland; Daley, Taylor, and Kenna Eggen; Madelyn and Zane Werre; Gibson (Kowal) Aaron; and Kaden and Aliyah Schommer; two great-grandsons: Thorin and Sebastian Barnes; two step-great-grandchildren: Morgan and Gavin Scott; her sister, Elaine Babcock of Ellendale, ND; sisters-in-law: Joan Mills of Walhalla, ND; Donetta (Vic) Serafini of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; Peggy Werre of Fargo, ND; a brother-in-law: Charles (Suzi) Anderson of Hillsboro, ND; and several nieces and nephews. Louise was preceded in death by her parents, Laurance and Elda; two brothers, David and Curtis; and one sister, Evelyn.
