Mary Lou's obituary

Mary Lou Kathleen O’Neill (nee Campbell), 85, of Livonia, Michigan, passed away on November 18, 2018, surrounded by her family.

Mary Lou was born in Detroit, Michigan, on December 5, 1932 to Chester and Amy Campbell. A resident of Detroit for the majority of her life, she graduated from Cooley High School in 1951. Mary Lou later attended Hillsdale College. She married Daniel (Dennis) O’Neill on October 29, 1955, and for 44 years they were at each other’s side until his death in 1999. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, sister Patricia Watter, and brother Michael Campbell.

Mary Lou worked at various jobs in her youth, including Detroit Edison, the Sanders Confectionary Company, the Detroit Bank, and JL Hudson. After raising five children she worked at H&R Block until she retired in 2002. She was an avid champion of the underdog, an advocate for the protection and comfort of stray animals, and a loyal supporter of police officers everywhere. Mary Lou enjoyed her grandchildren, good conversation, music, sewing, crocheting, reading, gardening and a sorority. Most of all, she reveled in the beauty of the woods and lakes of Northern Michigan, her second home.
Mary Lou is survived by her brother Donald Campbell (Patricia); children Sean Patrick O’Neill, Kathleen (John Thierry) O’Neill, Daniel (Cheryl) O’Neill, Molly (Jerry) Schmidt, and Thomas (Leticia) O’Neill; grandchildren: Jacob Schmidt, Aidan Thierry, Cody Schmidt, Meara Thierry, Sandra Schmidt, Ashley O’Neill, Liam Thierry, Rachel O’Neill, Daniel O’Neill Jr., Siria Cano, Sofia O’Neill, Victoria O’Neill and Thomas O’Neill Jr.; great-grandchildren: Charlotte Schmidt, and William Schmidt. She was also a foster grandmother to host of many family members and young people.

Mary Lou will be remembered by all who knew her for her love of music, song, dance and fun. The room was always filled with light when she entered and the stories and memories of Mary Lou will live on for many years in our hearts and gatherings until we meet again.

Cremation was handled by the Manns Family Funeral Home of Livonia, Michigan. A funeral mass was held at Our Lady of Loretto in Redford, Michigan, on November 19, 2018.

A committal service for the cremains of both Mary Lou and her husband Dan is scheduled for Saturday, January 5, 2019, 12:00 PM, at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery (25800 W. Ten Mile, Southfield, Michigan).
