Mary's obituary
Mary Alice Keenan South, aged 96, of Ferndale, passed away on January 7, 2026, at the Beaumont Hospital hospice in Royal Oak. Born on May 23, 1929, to Gertrude Halm and Francis Aloysius Keenan, she was one of four siblings: George, James, and Margaret. Mary was a dedicated Catholic and a career-long paralegal. Demonstrating commitment to lifelong learning, she returned to higher education in her 60s to earn her college degree. She was known for her intelligence, creativity, and kindness, and enjoyed a range of activities including music, singing, reading, painting, brain puzzles, cooking, knitting, gardening and, most of all, spending time with her family.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Raymond; sons Harold, Timothy, and Thomas; and grandson Joseph. She is survived by her son Raymond; daughters Barbara Meining and Carolyn Branigan; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be held on January 29 at 10:00 am at Shrine of the Little Flower, Royal Oak. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Capuchin Soup Kitchen, cancer research or charity of your choice.
