Mary Kathryn's obituary
Midway, Georgia: Mary Kathryn Hicks Rowell
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Kathryn Hicks Rowell (Midway, Georgia), born in Roberta, Georgia, on March 6, 1950. Kathryn, as she was lovingly known to her family and friends, passed away peacefully while sleeping Sunday, August 13, 2023, at the age of 73 after a lengthy illness.
Kathryn was predeceased by her parents, Mr. Wilson Hicks and Mrs. Mary Francis Andrews Hicks of Roberta, Georgia and her husband, Roy Robin Rowell, of Midway, Georgia. She is survived by her son, Jason Matthew Rowell; his wife, Talley Jenkins Rowell and four beautiful grandchildren, Kayla, Isaiah, Lilly, and Noah Rowell all of Savannah, Georgia; sisters-in-law, Ruth Joyner, Fort Valley, Georgia and Rochelle Hurt, Round Rock, Texas, along with many nieces and nephews.
Kathryn graduated from Crawford County High School in Roberta Georgia and received her bachelor’s degree in English Education from Georgia State College for Women. Upon graduating and marrying her high school sweetheart, Kathryn worked until retirement age as a high school English teacher at Crawford County High School (Roberta), Northside High School (Warner Robins), and Jenkins High School (Savannah). She was an excellent English instructor and cherished the time she spent sharing her love for correct grammar and beautiful literature with thousands of students over the years.
Kathryn unconditionally loved her family and would do anything within her power to care for the needs of her husband, their son, and his family. She absolutely adored her grandbabies. Every visit with her always included stories of what Kayla, Isaiah, Lilly, and Noah were doing. Kathryn’s every thought was of her family and friends and things that she could do to support them.
Ask Kathryn what her favorite activity was, and she would say, “coffee and conversation!” Pour Kathryn a cup of black coffee, give her a great chair facing the water, and put her in the center chair near her best friends, Judy or Ruth (who were as close to sisters as Kathryn ever had), and her nieces and grandnieces for a girl’s visit and you would see the biggest smiles as her eyes twinkled while she told stories and entertained us for hours. It goes without saying that her favorite stories always centered around her husband, son, grandchildren, friends, and past students. Very rarely would you hear Kathryn talking about herself and that was because she always put others first.
For those of us who knew and loved Mary Kathryn Hicks Rowell, it is very hard for us to say farewell. She was an amazingly resilient, strong, and fiercely loyal woman and her passing has left a void in our lives that can never be filled. We ask that you keep her family and friends in your prayers as we work through this grief, but we also ask that you rejoice with us as we know she is no longer suffering but reunited in heaven with Jesus Christ, her parents, husband, and loved ones who have gone on before.
Funeral plans are still being arranged for the final interment. In lieu of flowers, Kathryn would prefer that you take a moment to spend time with your family and friends, read a good book to your grandchildren, and always see the positive in every day.
