Background

From Mary Jo's Facebook page:

Reading is one of my passions and I loved watching first graders as they learned and being a school librarian for three years was a highlight of my career. My childhood library was a quick walk from home and I went at least once a week. I appreciate our local library delivering books to our cars...I could never afford to buy all that I read.. Book clubs have enabled me to spend quality time with ladies who share my love. Our Bathtub Readers group will meet again when this pandemic is over...I love you and miss you. #givethanks

–----------------

Mary Jo was passionate about making sure both children and adults could read fluently, from her first graders to the people in the classes she volunteered to teach after retirement at the Tooele County Detention Center (even if it was officially about family history indexing). Weeks before her passing, I heard her use the term "literacy discrimination," and I had not considered what a privilege it was to have her as a mother to guide me through my literacy journey. Even if you hand delivered books to a local shelter, school or family in need, that would be very special to her.
