Mary Patricia Geraghty passed away on April 9, 2025, after a life filled with the love of learning—a passion she readily shared with all her family and many wonderful friends. She is a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School in Somers, New York, and Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Mary also earned master's degrees from the College of William and Mary and The Catholic University of America. Mary shared her love of history with her brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews. She enjoyed taking them to visit 18th-century street fairs in Old Town Alexandria, Maryland's Renaissance Festivals, explorations of Stonehenge in England, and Pompeii in Italy, to name a few. Her passion for history always made such visits so much more meaningful and interesting. Mary was a gifted storyteller, and she always knew how to liven up a good conversation. Mary had a long career in Washington, DC, working for Representatives Bill Green of Manhattan and Representative Bill Coyne from Pittsburgh, and almost three decades with the Congressional Research Service at the Library of Congress, where she is still to this day the “voice of CRS”, just call for a listen. Mary rose to the level of Head of the Congressional Research Service section at CRS. She received many accolades over her distinguished career, including the Director’s Award in 2009. The outpouring of love and support from her friends and work colleagues during her illness demonstrated a life so well-lived. The weekly phone calls with her friends from college always lifted her spirits. Mary’s family is so proud to have had her as a driving force in their lives, from organizing summer carnivals to raise money for various charities, to motivating us to sing Christmas carols with some wonderful neighbors on Christmas Eve for many years. Mary also led the Geraghtys to explore the Outer Banks of North Carolina, which became our favorite family vacation spot for decades. Mary was also known for her love of Mini Coopers, and she had the unique ability to maintain eye contact while driving 70 on the interstate. Mary is survived by her loving family, including her sister Nancy and her husband Gary, her brother Pat and his wife Inger. Her brother Joe and his wife Shannon, and her brother-in-law Ben. Mary loved every one of her nieces and nephews. Joe and his wife Deidra, Erin, Jamie, Bridie and her husband Mitchell, Danielle, Nick, Joe and his fiancé Kim, Jake, Sean and his partner Sophie, Briege, Kiera, Karli and her husband Erik, Jack, Noah and his wife Taylor. Mary also had seven young great-nieces and nephews who all had a special place in her heart: Mackenzie, Clark, Ryan, Benjamin, Emilia, Jonah, and Maeve. Instead of flowers, please send in a donation to PBS in Mary's name. Mary was pre-deceased by our sister Susie, and our mom and dad. May she enjoy her reunion with them and may she rest in peace.
