Mary's obituary
In Loving Memory of
Mary Anne Browning
Mary Anne Browning (née Zwaag), age 95, cherished mother and grandmother, peacefully departed this world in her sleep on September 24, 2023 in Camarillo, CA.
Born April 29, 1928, in Hilversum, Netherlands, to Cornelia and Jan Zwaag, Mary is survived by her devoted daughter, Gwendolyn Donohue Pyfrom of Thousand Oaks, and her adoring grandchildren, Brendan Donohue of Ventura and Kaitlin Donohue Johns of Agoura. She leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue through her great-granddaughter, Roxie Layne Donohue, as well as dear friends and family members in Holland and Northern California.
On July 27, 1950, Mary wed her beloved Frans Johan Bruijntjes (Frank Browning), embarking on a journey that unfolded into nearly 32 years of treasured memories and adventures together before he predeceased her. Mary, steadfast in her love for Frank, never sought to remarry, preserving their deep connection throughout her lifetime. She lovingly kept his spirit alive by sharing heartfelt stories of their shared years in Holland and abroad, a testament to their enduring bond that will forever reside in our hearts.
Mary's remarkable life took her across four continents. She spent her formative years in the Netherlands, growing up in Amsterdam and Zanvoort aan Zee. In 1950, she and Frank began their married life in East Africa, and later their adventures led them to New Zealand. Eventually, they immigrated to California in 1960, where Mary made her home in San Jose and later Thousand Oaks.
Mary cherished her heritage and enjoyed sharing Dutch traditions (and treats!) with her family. She delighted in day trips to Santa Cruz, enjoying dinners at the Ideal Fish Restaurant with a Manhattan in hand, savoring Lobster Thermidor. Summers in Lake Tahoe were a source of joy, as was the simple pleasure of a cup of clam chowder near the beach. Her passion for travel was evident, with Hawaii standing as a favorite and frequent destination throughout her adult life.
Mary's nurturing spirit, combined with her zest for life, radiated as she embraced her roles as a devoted mother and grandmother. She was an integral part of her grandchildren's lives, a constant presence to commemorate joyful moments or uplift them during challenging times. With her warm and welcoming demeanor, adorned by her delightful Dutch accent, she never failed to bring joy to all who had the pleasure of meeting her.
A resilient survivor of Breast Cancer, Mary took great pride in her journey and found fulfillment in connecting with and inspiring fellow patients and survivors through her involvement with the American Cancer Society. Additionally, she generously donated her time as a volunteer at the Civic Arts Plaza in Thousand Oaks, where her kindness touched the lives of many.
Mary Anne Browning's presence in our lives was a gift, and her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed, but her love and legacy will endure in our hearts.
