Mary Ann graduated from John Harris HS in Harrisburg, PA in 1949. She worked at Stroehmann Bakery, Bell Telephone, and later at Hershey Medical Center, starting in the late 1970s. Mary Ann was a lifetime member of Rutherford Heights VFW Post 1213 since the late 1960s. She knitted a large flag that is framed and hangs there to this day.
Mary Ann married Richard Smith on January 20th 1951. Throughout their entire marriage they loved to travel. In the early years, they would go to Canada, Niagara Falls, Atlantic City, and Arizona to name a few. Their 60th anniversary trip to Aruba in 2011 was Mary Ann’s favorite. January 2021 was their 70th wedding anniversary which they celebrated by buying a new car.
After 13 years of marriage, their family grew with the birth of their daughter Michelle on June 16, 1964. Mary Ann shared her love of musicals, Christmas music, dance and the beach with her. Her favorite movie was the Sound of Music, and she admired De Grazia's artwork from the foothills of Arizona. She thoroughly enjoyed the Hallmark channel, parades, dance performances, and ice skating. A talented knitter and seamstress, she loved making matching outfits for Michelle. One of the highlights was the pilgrim dress complete with pumpkin pie to wear on Thanksgiving in the early 1970s.
The whole family enjoyed making (and eating) the chocolate Easter eggs Mary Ann’s mother (Mom-Mom) had passed down to her. She always looked forward to making Christmas cookies too with the grands and great grands.
Mary Ann had a soft spot for chocolate, seafood, Bloody Marys, and margaritas. Her favorite vacation spots were Aruba and anywhere there was a beach, showing her love for the ocean and sunsets. This love extended to her support for the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
While Mary Ann’s loved ones are saddened by her passing, they are so grateful she was able to enjoy a very full 92 years and also after probably the longest 3 years, she is reunited with the love of her life.
