Alyce's obituary

Mary-Alyce Hagelstein (nee McCann) passed away on August 22, 2021 surrounded by her loved ones. Born on May 4, 1947 to Thomas and Jess McCann, Alyce, as she was referred to by friends and family, grew up on her family farm in Hurffville, New Jersey. The second of six children and the eldest daughter, Alyce was a beloved, headstrong girl. She graduated from Gloucester Catholic in 1965 and went to keypunch school and eventually got a job at Fimaco with her long time best friend, Kathy. The two girls had numerous adventures together including seeing the Beatles in Atlantic City and traveling together throughout their lives. When they were determined to go to Woodstock their fathers threatened to find them and drag them home. (You can see where the headstrong genes came from).

On July 19, 1975 Alyce married the love of her life, Robert Hagelstein. Their family would include two children, Thomas (Lauren) and Jessica (William), and a step-son, Bobby, who along with Robert she is survived by. Alyce was a loving mother and active in her children’s lives including helping with fundraising, clubs, and sports they were involved with. She eventually worked with the Clayton Public School system, retiring in 2007. Alyce was a lot of things to so many people wife, mother, daughter, friend. She was a loving sister to Lou, Thomas, James, Michael, and Miriam and would always lend a helping hand or words of encouragement, or her very honest opinion. Her nieces and nephews were always looked after, especially goddaughter, Colleen. Her friendship crossed overseas when she befriended a British penpal, Marie, who she stayed close with throughout her life along with her husband John and friends, Jim and Sue. But of all these her favorite role was grandmother to Jayson, Jewelyssa, Harvey, Ideyana, Will, and Brian.

This wonderful, caring soul will be truly missed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America in honor of her mother, Jess McCann.
