Marty's obituary

Martin Edward “Marty” Haas 76, of Des Moines Iowa and formerly of Keene, NH passed away on February 6th 2025.

He had been diagnosed with Parkinson's and Dementia and was in the Memory Care Unit for 5 years at Calvin Community in Des Moines. He died peacefully in his sleep.

Marty was born to James and Diana (Foster) Haas October 21st 1948 in Perry, Iowa. He was little brother to older sister Nancy.

While at Perry High School Marty excelled at sports. He played 4 years of basketball and 4 years of golf. He earned letterman in 11th and 12th grades.

In High School, the Haas Family hosted exchange student Louie from Brazil. They all instantly bonded and Louie called Marty his American Brother.

Marty’s friends growing up through elementary and high school years were lifelong. He was especially proud of the Perry High Class of 1967.

After High School and some college, Marty became interested in computers and was a computer programmer leading up to a senior programmer analysis and IT specialist when he retired.

He worked at NGM in Keene, NH for 20+ years. He joined the Circle of Excellence in the 1990s and was part of the Demonics Club. He ran the Sports Pools for quite a few years as well.

Marty’s favorite 4 letter word was Golf. He played whenever he was able to and did quite well with his scores. He played with co-workers, family and friends young and old.

Music was another of his past times. He especially enjoyed Dave Matthews Band and went to a number of their concerts.

Marty enjoyed cooking and trying out new recipes. He was very methodical in “cleaning as he went along”. Every Sunday he made pancakes for the family.

He and his wife Mary had 3 sons together. Matthew, Steven and Brian.

Marty was a sports fan especially the Iowa Hawkeyes, New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys.

He had a love of animals especially his rescue miniature poodle Gilbert who he traveled with extensively.

Marty is survived by sons Matthew and Steven of Keene, NH. Brian and daughter in law Ana and Grandson Thomas of West New York, NJ. His nephews Tim (Jeflyn) and Greg (Amanda) and their families as well as Kate of Iowa. He is also survived by cousins Jeff (Jan) and John (Margo). 

He is preceded by his parents James and Diana, sister Nancy, brother in law Thomas Gilman and wife Ronda Haas.

Marty was well-liked and fun to be around. He instantly made you feel welcome and made for an enjoyable time.

Saturday March 29th at 1pm
