Martin's obituary

Martin Hearn Algar passed away at home in San Clemente early on August 24th. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, his two daughters, Janine and Yvonne and two sons Brian and Martin Jr. He was a grandfather and great grandfather. Born in 1936 at Ponders End, Enfield, London, he was the 8th child in a family of nine; life was not easy. At a young age, Martin experienced the blitz of London and was a child evacuee sent away with his brother to rural England for safety.

In the early 50’s Martin emigrated to South Africa with his sister and brother-in-law. He partnered with his brothers to form a contracting firm and learned the building trade during these years.

Martin met his first wife, and mother of his 5 children, Anna, in Southern California. Returning to South Africa for a time, then residing in Riverside County until moving to Laguna Beach, California after divorce.

Martin built homes in Laguna Beach during the 70’s & 80’s, spent leisure time at Ben Brown’s golf course and around town. He came to be known in the community as a hard-working builder, developer, landlord, golfer, and raconteur. After several short marriages, he met his 5th wife, Pamela and married in 1991. His last project in Laguna Beach was development of a multi-unit vacation rental on Catalina Street.

Martin and Pamela moved to San Clemente in 1996 where he continued to successfully renovate and sell homes near the Municipal Golf Course. Martin was cremated at Lesneski Mortuary in San Clemente. No public service is to be held, but he will be honored as a father, husband and friend—mourned and missed. His memory and the stories he told will remind us that we have loved and been loved.
