Martha's obituary

Martha Steward Smith, beloved wife of the late Charles M. (Chuck) Smith, PhD, for 70 years, died July 20, 2021 in Washington, DC. She will be remembered for her sense of humor, understated elegance, and generous, grateful spirit.

Martha was born August 15, 1922, in Grand Junction, IA, twin to the late Mary Steward Hanna, sister to the late Mildred Steward Slack and Tom Steward (Thyrza), and is survived by her sister Marilyn Steward Gregson (Buzz). She is celebrated and mourned by her sons John (Pam) of Hilo, HI, and Dan (Cathy) of Cheverly, MD, and daughters Diane (Jim) Dynes of Thornton, CO, and Debra (Byron) Lundquist of Bozeman, MT. She was preceded in death by her daughters Susan Halvorson (Ron) and Karen Davis (Larry).

Martha was adored beyond measure by her 10 grandchildren and 15 surviving great-grandchildren. She leaves behind dozens of nieces and nephews and countless friends—precious among them her community at Collington Senior Life Care in Mitchellville, MD.

Martha attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa, IA, and often recounted stories of her work distributing war-ration books during World War II. She was an avid memoir writer and enjoyed sharing details of her and Chuck’s many travels domestically and overseas. She never said no to a road trip, a hot fudge sundae, or a visitor. She made everyone feel like their funniest, smartest self, and she was grateful for everything.
