Martha's obituary
Martha Alfreeda Gordon was born on July 11th, 1945, to Arnold and Martha Gordon in Balaclava, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. She was the sixth born of nine children. Martha attended primary school in Balaclava and secondary school in Kingston, Jamaica.
She began her lifelong nursing journey by attending Queensborough Community College in Queens, New York, where she received her registered professional nurse (RN) license. At the time, she also worked at Roosevelt Hospital as an Emergency Room Tech. She then pursued her bachelor's degree in Nursing at Adelphi University. She dedicated most of her life to the healthcare field, working at places such as Lydia Hall Hospital, per diem at Parkview Nursing Home, Hempstead Middle School, and private duty nursing. Martha also co-owned the Bellmore Nurses Agency.
Martha purchased a home on Anna Avenue in Roosevelt, NY in 1971. In 1975, she married Winston Moses. They later divorced in 1980. Martha married again in 1981 to Claudius Peters. In 1978, Martha took in Keith Thompson and Opal McPartlin, raising them as her own after her sister Dolcie Thompson passed away.
Martha joined the Iglesia ni Cristo (Church of Christ) in 1979. She remained a faithful member and served as a devoted deaconess and assistant group overseer, while taking every opportunity to share her faith with family and friends.
Her favorite pastimes included tennis and bowling. She participated in the summer bowling leagues for a few years with her good friend Joan Berkeley. Her favorite color was purple. She was a charitable giver. She has donated to many causes, including World Visions, for the past 19 years. She enjoyed traveling and visiting different countries, including England, the Philippines, Italy, France, Spain, Ivory Coast, and many islands of the Caribbean and Latin America.
She is preceded in death by her parents Arnold and Martha Gordon, and her siblings, Raymond Gordon and Dolcie Thompson. Martha battled breast cancer for a long time and passed away peacefully on January 16th, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital in Oceanside, New York. She is survived by her siblings Sheila Gordon, Nerissa Robinson (s. Keith Robinson) Carmen Jones, Kenneth (s. Audrey) Gordon and Veron (s. Donna) Gordon; her daughter Opal (s. Joseph) McPartlin, and her son Keith (s. Rewa) Thompson; her grandchildren Steven (s. Ann Leigh), Joey, and Kristine McPartlin; Brianna and Kayla Thompson; her great-grandchildren Darien, Savana and Adam McPartlin; her niece Simone Chimeura and an abundance of loving family and friends from all over.
