Martha's obituary
Martha M. Chappell passed away on April 11. 2023 at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, District of Columbia. She reached her 95th birthday on April 6, 2023. She was born in Halifax, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Rufus Fallen and the late Mary Fallen.
Martha was reared with her brother James, 4 sisters: a twin sister Mary, Evangeline, Sallie and Nannie B. Except for Nannie B, her siblings preceded her in death.
Martha married the late Leon Chappell in November of 1949 in Halifax, Virginia. In 1959, she and Leon moved to Washington, DC where they cherished and reared their daughter, the late Martina Chappell.
Martha leaves to celebrate her memory her granddaughter LeVona Chappell, 5 great-grandchildren: Leon, DaiQuan, Daijanai, Raja and Richard Jr., her sister Nannie B. and a host of extended relatives and friends.
Martha jointed Galilee Baptist Church in Suitland, Maryland in 1999 where she was a loved and devoted member. She was a member of the church's Sanctuary of Praise and Heavenly Voices Choir, the Renaissance Senior's Academy and the Widow and Widower's Ministry.
Her last wishes were to have her remains donated to the Georgetown University School of Medicine and for the school to have any unused cremation of her remains interred at Mt. Olivet Cemetary, 1200 Bladensburg Road NE, Washington, DC 20002.
A memorial service was held for Martha at Galilee Baptist Church, 2101 Shadyside Avenue, Suitland, Maryland 20746 where the Reverend Brian Madison provided a eulogy that celebrated her life.
