Martez's obituary
“Martez took his first breath on September 9, 1992, and gave the world his final smile on July 2, 2025. Today, we bow our heads and say our prayers in remembrance of our Son, Brother, Uncle, and Cousin – Martez Ronnell King, a quiet soul with a laugh that could light up any room.
Growing up, Martez wasn’t the loudest voice in the house, nor the one to draw attention to himself. He observed more than he spoke, and even as a child, he carried a certain stillness about him – like he was always observing something that the rest of us weren’t quite paying attention to. That quietness was part of who he was and those who really knew him understood how deeply he felt things, even if he didn’t always say them out loud.
Then, there was his laugh. When he laughed, really laughed, it was as if the sun came out shining bright. His laughter had this contagious, joyful quality that could change the energy of a room. It was the kind of laugh that made you laugh, even if you didn’t know what was funny. In that laugh, I think we all saw the best parts of him – the warmth, the spark, and the essence of who he was.
Life pulled us all in different directions, and like many family members, we didn’t always understand each other. Today, we choose to remember the pieces of him that stayed with us – the way he could find joy in small things as a child, like doing intense round of backflips, throwing rocks then hiding his little hands, and chasing rabbits and squirrels. Also, his unique sense of humor, and how, even in his silence, he was present.
Losing someone always brings questions that we can’t answer. What we do know is that our brother, Martez mattered. His life, with all its complexity, meant something. His memory – that quiet presence, that unforgettable laugh – will live on in all of us who knew him.
May he now find the peace that sometimes eluded him in this life.
He leaves behind his mother and stepfather Ulysses and Vail McCall. His father, Martin King. Sisters Qui, T, and Kaila, brother, Jeremy, niece Zari and nephew Bryson. He also leaves behind special memories with many maternal relatives, Aunts Vee, Vicky, and Rose, Brenika, Hombre, Desiree, Breshia, Demetre, Derondrian, Aunt Lucy, Uncles Robert and Darryl, Cedricka, Ericka, SyBron, Sande, Ravelle, Lorene, Eavonda, Jerry, Caressa, Kim, Nikki, and Jamila. He leaves special memories with his paternal relatives, including Grandma Phe, Aunt Chelle, Uncle Billy, Jennifer, Roxanne, JR., Tasha, Candace, Cherelle, and many others.
He is proceeded in death by his maternal Aunt Connie, Breodon, and Deondra. He is also proceeded in death by BJ on his father’s side.
