Marta's obituary
Marta Ann Moody, respected community leader and beloved sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2023, surrounded by family. She was 71. Marta was a kind and loyal public servant with a strong intellect who truly cared about others. Although she will be greatly missed, her smile and laughter will live on forever.
An Indiana native, Marta was born in Lafayette on November 4, 1951. She was a graduate of Chesterton High School in northwest Indiana and was active in student government. She earned her college degree from Ball State University and made the Muncie community her lifelong home.
Having entered public service as a Zoning Planner in 1979, Marta was named Executive Director of the Delaware-Muncie Metropolitan Plan Commission in 1987, where she served for the remainder of her 44-year career. Colleagues and associates note her professionalism, her passion for connecting the community, and her ability to bring others together to accomplish beneficial projects.
Marta served on several boards including the Indiana Association of Floodplain and Stormwater Management and the White River Watershed Project. She served on the Cardinal Greenways Board of Directors for more than 20 years, most recently as board President, for which she was honored in October 2022 with the Ball Brothers Foundation John W. and Janice B. Fisher Governance Award, for “exemplary leadership, integrity, responsibility and accountability.”
Over the course of her career, Marta worked tirelessly and cheerfully for the successful development of the trail system in Muncie and neighboring communities. She was honored with the 2023 Indiana Greenways Foundation Award, in memoriam, on April 25, for important contributions to the development of trails in Indiana.
Marta cared about students and she worked to provide opportunities for their educational development. In memory and appreciation of her longtime partnership with Ball State’s Department of Urban Planning, faculty established the Marta Moody Public Sector Awards presented to two students in an inaugural ceremony on April 17.
Marta is survived by her sister Debby (Lou) Martin, brothers Jon Moody, Ozzie (Rachel) Moody, and Jeff (Amy Smith) Moody, cousins Carol Mills and Mike (Lisa) Moody, nephews Peter Martin and Elliot (Ashley Whipple) Martin, nieces Sophie Moody(Austin Reagan) and Lauren Moody, great niece Piper Martin, and dear friends Phyllis and Ron Quackenbush, and Phil Tevis.
