Marshall's obituary
Marshall Douglas Smith, age 84, passed to be with our Lord and Father, Jesus Christ, on June 15th, 2023, at Rawlings's house in Pendleton, Indiana.
He was known to many as “Marsh” out east and “Doug” throughout the Midwest. Marshall Douglas was born January 14th, 1939, to Malcolm Douglas and Anne Brown Smith, and spent his early years in Germantown, Philadelphia, PA. He attended Ocean City High School in Ocean City, New Jersey, he graduated in 1956 and was a member of the football team. Marshall Douglas was a Lifeguard with the Ocean City Beach Patrol for two summers, 1955 & 1956 and he was an Ocean City Police Summer officer in 1969.
He attended the Virginia Military Institute from 1956 -1957, and the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. Marshall Douglas married Winifred Manwaring of Indianapolis, Indiana on February 24th, 1962. They have three children together, Gregory Smith, Alison Smith-Fields, and Douglas Smith ll.
Marshall Douglas remarried Loretta Dolly Smith, and they spent his retirement years residing in Middletown Ohio, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Marshall Douglas was a dotting step-grandfather to Dolly's grandchildren and loved them very much.
In 1996, Marshall Douglas Smith was recognized by President Clinton for his tireless effort to pass significant legislation of the Aviation Disaster Family Assistance Act, which ensured better communication and aid to victims' families after aircraft disasters. His efforts in passing this legislation began after the loss of his Daughter Alison in October of 1994, on American Eagle flight 4184.
Marshall Douglas is preceded in death by his Father Douglas Malcolm Smith, his mother Anne Brown Smith, his daughter Alison Smith-Fields and his sister Suzanne Le bonSimpson (Pittsburg, PA).
Marshall Douglas is survived by his sons Gregory, and Douglas Smith. Grandchildren Alison, Trinity, and Cole Smith and his two stepsons Marty and Joel Grubbs.
Services are being held at Calvary Baptist Church in Ocean View, New Jersey. At 10:30 am, Friday, July 14th, 2023.
