Marsha Josephine Pennamon, M.Ed. 73, of Flossmoor, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 4th, 2022, surrounded by her family. Affectionately known as Itsy, Marsha grew up in Chicago, Illinois, where she was reared under the guidance of βBig Mamaβ. At an early age, her love of reading flourished. An avid reader early in life, who knew, one day it would lead to Marshaβs drive to secure a 2nd masterβs degree, from Saint Xavier University, as a Reading Specialist in May 2002. However, letβs not get ahead of her story.
Marsha began her educational journey at Parker Manor, graduating from 8th grade in June 1960 and then moving on to attend Parker High School. Marsha was an exceptional student who made two grade doubles. However, she still found a way to balance her academic success and participate in many extracurricular activities. Marshaβs academic promotions allowed for her to graduate high school, at the tender age of 16, in June of 1964. Throughout her elementary and high school years, Marsha solidified friendships that created lifetime bonds up until her transition.
Marsha Josephineβs favorite scripture was Jeremiah 29:11, βFor I know the plans I have for you,β declares the Lord, βplans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.β She dedicated her life early to the Lord. Her walk of faith was a constant guide throughout her lifeβs journey.
Marsha Josephine was an extremely intuitive and loving Mommy. She provided each of her children, son, Michael Irving (sunrise, August 1968- sunset, October 1973) and daughter, Joy Charisse with unconditional love that nurtured them to their lives full potential.
In 1989, Marsha Josephine made a decision to become an educator. She worked tirelessly to obtain her 1st masterβs degree as a single mother, working a full-time job and going to school. Marsha led by the philosophy of βstarting with the end in mindβ. Her intrinsic motivation stemmed from a longing to become an educator, in efforts to instill in young minds her love for learning and the value it holds.
Upon graduating from Roosevelt University in May of 1993, she began her teaching career at Dolton School District 149, as an elementary educator, Reading Specialist, Yearbook Committee Advisor, and Math Bowl Advisor during her 22-year tenure, until retirement.
Marsha Josephine enjoyed her lifeβs journey. Outside of her days in the classroom, she embarked upon lifeβs adventures such as traveling, bike riding, roller skating, and family events.
Marsha Josephine had an undeniable bond with her grandson, Caleb, whom she affectionately referred to as, βbaby boyβ. Caleb loved his, Gram equally. Calebβs presence in her life brought a light, that no one could dim. She was an active participant in his life, from his spelling bee competitions to being a spectator at his Fencing tournaments. Calebβs Gram, did not miss being apart of his journey. In later years, Caleb had become an outstanding caregiver for her, as well. She was always grateful for the priceless moments shared between them. As the sun began to set on Gramβs life, Caleb held onto many memories to cherish in moments of reflection. The fondest, may be their love of DoorDash! In our home, one would often hear, βCaleb? Iβm about to order, what do you want to eat baby boy?β
Marsha Josephine, will be deeply missed and always treasured.
Marsha Josephine βItsyβ Pennamon, M.Ed. was predeceased by her loving son Michael Irving Harris; mother Juanita Pitts McGregor; sister Laura Harris, and nephew Richard Harris. She is survived by her daughter Joy Charisse Brutus, MAT; her son-in-love Phillippe Brutus; her grandson Caleb Brutus; her fur babies, The Pups; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family, whom she loved dearly.
A celebration of life, Β was held in Marsha Josephine βItsyβ Pennamon, M.Ed.βs honor.Β
