Mary's obituary
Opelika - Mary Margaret Gibson died September 5, 2022, from complications following a short illness. Born in Jackson, Alabama on October 12, 1936, she was the only daughter of Edgar J. and Georgia B. Scott.
After graduating from Emory University in 1966 with a degree in nursing, she practiced her profession in northeast Alabama and South Carolina for nearly four decades. Mary Margaret and her family lived throughout South Carolina -- in Kingstree, Sumter, and Anderson-- before moving back to her home state of Alabama. Settling in Opelika, where she raised a family and lived for the past 48 years.
Surviving Mary is her devoted husband of 52 years, Richard Joe (RJ) Gibson; their two children, Lee R. Gibson of Beaufort, SC and May Gibson Hagan of Nashville, Tennessee; and their four grandchildren, Elizabeth Anna Gibson, Marry Scott Gibson, Mackenzie May Hagan, and Knox Hagan. Also, surviving are two brothers: Christopher M. Scott (Chris) of Auburn, Alabama, and Jackson Eugene Scott (Jes) of Laurel, Montana.
Mary Margaret was a member of Opelika United Methodist Church and the Agnes Rogers Circle. Memorials may be sent to Opelika United Methodist Church, 702 Ave A, Opelika, AL 36801.
At her request, Mary Margaret's body was donated to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine's "Gift of Body" program. A family memorial service will be held at a later date.
