Very saddened to hear about Marlin's passing. "Maif" and I were were good friends, along with others, when stationed together at Loring Air Force Base from 1964 to 1967. Lots of laughs, good times; wonderful memories that serve me today.

I was going to a fishing tournament with the Indian Guides when I was 5 years old. My dad took me to the local K Mart and got the cheapest fishing rod on offer. We then went to the the grocery store and got a dozen doughnuts and a box of Velveeta cheese. We got to the lake and I saw the other kids there with the fancy tackle boxes, the flashy silver lures and rods ten times the cost of my K Mart special. I was thinking my dad was being mean to me. He patiently had me set up the rod and put an ball of Velveeta on the hook. After waiting about 1 minute I said "It isn't working!" and went into the camper to pout and eat a doughnut. After no less and two to three minutes my friend yelled out, "Hey Chris! You got one!!!!" After running back to the lake and excitedly reeling in the catch I thought, "Hmmmm maybe my dad is on to something, I just made the first catch of the day before all 100 or so kids on this lake." By the end of the day, I had the trophy for the most fish, the trophy for the largest fish, the trophy for the smallest fish and I also won the raffle and had a brand new sleeping bag! I learned a valuable lesson for my dad which is that it takes smarts to win and that the most expensive solution is not always the best one. I love you dad!
