Mark's obituary
Mark W. Nelson
March 11, 1958 — April 15, 2026
Mark W. Nelson, born March 11, 1958, passed away peacefully at the age of 68 of natural causes, leaving behind a life defined by his loving spirit, passion, and deep appreciation for the world around him.
Mark grew up in Libby, Montana, and his grandfather, Ed Ekholm, lived just across the border in Sandpoint, Idaho where fond memories of riding alongside his grandfather in his 1966 Ford 100 pickup helped shape his lifelong love of meaningful connections and life’s simple moments.
After high school, Mark boldly ventured out on his own, moving to Missoula to earn his bachelor’s degree in journalism at the University of Montana, where he developed his diligent work ethic and strong sense of purpose.
His most treasured work was as a housekeeper at Community Medical Center in Missoula, where his deep care for others showed in every exchange. He cherished the community his coworkers provided and approached each week with dedication and pride.
Throughout his life, Mark remained devoted to photography, spending countless hours capturing the vibrant oranges of fall and the radiant blooms of spring. Deeply nostalgic, he honored his past each week — Friday night dinners at the Food Zoo, trips to Dairy Queen in his grandfather’s pickup — always finding ways to relive the times he treasured most.
His grandfather’s 1966 Ford was Mark’s most prized possession. He spent summers winning car shows and pouring care into the truck – which stood as a living symbol of his bond with his grandpa and a connection to all he held dear.
Mark will be remembered for his kindness, his thoughtful nature, and his gift for finding beauty in everyday life. His kindness left a lasting mark on the lives of his friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by cousins: Bill and Sally Mitchell and his best friend Denny Nelson-Sween. He was preceded in death by his parents; dear friend Tyler Michels, and grandfather, Edwin Ekholm.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3pm on Sunday, April 26, 2026 at Community Medical Center’s courtyard near the Inpatient Rehabilitation building.
