Mark's obituary
MARK EDWIN VERGASON – A TRUE FLORIDIAN COMPRISED OF CREATIVITY, LAUGHTER, LOVE, AND A GREEN THUMB
Mark Vergason, 70, was united with our Lord and Savior, November 24th, 2023. Mark, the son of Warren and Carol Vergason was born in Tallahassee, FL on August 25th, 1953. Mark grew up attending several grade schools in Florida and played baseball at all of them. As an incoming senior at Palmetto Senior High School, he beat out the existing shortstop of three years for the starting position. He received a scholarship to continue his baseball interests at the University of South Florida, where he would graduate and receive his bachelor’s degree in 1978. Immediately after graduation he moved to Indialantic, Florida and shocked the business world with his creative talents, owning nine successful businesses in a five-year span. His most loved business of the bunch – Contessa Florist, the first florist to sell flowers inside Winn Dixie stores throughout Florida.
Mark joined the family advertising business “Vergason & Johns Advertising” in 1983. Within a few years, due to Marks participation, the business grew into one of the largest premier advertising agencies in the southeastern United States. In 1984 he met the love of his life of thirty-seven and a half years Cherie Hughes Vergason. Mark and Cherie married in 1986, and shortly thereafter moved to Windermere, Florida where they raised their two boys, Chase, and Chad. Mark was the kind of father who put family first, every time. He never missed a baseball game, a band concert, piano recital, or anything else that was important to his family, because his family was everything to him.
With Cherie by his side, he grew the advertising agency to new heights while operating under the name “Vergason, Sojourner & McWaters”, “VSM” for short. VSM was, and still is, a full-service advertising agency. VSM’s primary clientele were in the business of real estate, and for decades VSM continued to win top awards for Creative, Marketing, and Television talents. VSM is still in existence today, with fifty-three years under the belt and now under the reins of Marks eldest son, Chase Vergason.
Living a full life, Mark was an avid fisherman, landing a record-breaking tarpon at Sebastian Inlet. He had the uncanny ability to turn a barren yard into a thriving oasis, his own back yard often referred to by those who knew him as “the resort”, or “the V Lodge”. Mark also loved music, the number of concerts and music festivals he attended during his lifetime would make a calculator malfunction, and he may have also been the only man over the age of 30 wearing a dinosaur onesie at any given music festival, alongside Cherie and his boys.
Although a man showered with success and achievements, Mark always said his family was his greatest achievement.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents Warren and Carol, and is survived by his wife Cherie Vergason, two sons, Chase and Chad Vergason, labradoodle Nala Vergason, and his siblings Nancy (Steve) Sojourner, Reid (Suzy) Vergason, and Sherri (Bill) Simon. A beautiful Celebration of life will be held in New Smyrna Beach, March 24th by invitation only.
