In 1997 we as a family went to our first preseason game in Green Bay. We were in line to meet and get an autograph from Brett Favre. We got out of line to go see the packers players coming from practice. As they were coming toward us Chris sat down on the ground for some reason. The next thing he new Robert Brooks was helping him up off the ground. He then signed the helmet Chris was holding. As we got back in line to meet Brett we noticed more people ahead of us. We didn't start to worry until we were only 5 people away from meeting him. That's when they said no more autographs. We were very disappointed. We then proceeded to the chain link fence where they were practicing. I was squished against this fence trying to get a good picture of Brett Favre. This was actually using a real camera. I did get a few good pictures. We sure enjoyed that adventure as a family.
This is from Karen, Mark's Sister and Glen his Brother in Law

Mark was a real fighter for the good things in life, and showed us all
how to take challenges and setbacks with grace and determination. We
will miss his love for his family, his humor, and his car advice. He
had just finished most of the work in remodeling his house, and hardly
had much time to enjoy it. Recently, Mark and Karen had a chance to
stay up talking until the wee morning hours, entertained by a fast
little mouse that kept running across the floor, who was quicker than
we were. He and his son, Chris, did amazing work together in their car
bodyshop. Mark grew up to be an outstanding business owner, friend,
husband, and father.
We loved him so much.
Sister Karen and Brother-Love Glen.

This is from Debbie, Mark's Sister

For the last 30 plus years, I have lived in Palatine, Illinois, and Mark and his family have lived in La Crosse, Wisconsin, a mere 500 miles (approximately) apart.

Even though we lived many miles apart, it always felt like we were next door neighbors when we got together. He was so focused when he had to find ways to "fix" all kinds of different challenges around the house. When he came to visit there was an inevitable trip or two to the local hardware store!

There was one night when Mark was having a cigarette on my patio and a little black with white stripes critter snuck around the corner and sauntered under the chair he was sitting in. Mark quietly watched as this wild animal made its way through the area. That was a very close call.

Christmastime was when the chocolate covered cherries came out. They never lasted long. He savored each and every one. He so enjoyed these treats.

Mark was a family man. He adored his wife, admired his children, Christopher and Melissa every day of his life. He wanted to help teach them to be responsible, respected individuals. Mark and Michelle figured out how to work together to make this happen.

He liked helping people. Fixing things always challenged him. He would take a look, sit back, and evaluate the options, then fix it!

This was my brother, Mark. I will miss his special sense of humor and seeing how he challenged himself to be the best person he could be every day of his life.
Since our sons have been friends since childhood, I met Mark and Michelle at different times. Mark seemed quiet but was steadfast and kind. From the obituary I can surmise that you have a lot of wonderful family memories. Michelle, Chris and Melissa, you have my deepest sympathy.
I will always remember Mark pushing his homemade go-chart, that my dad and Mark put together from parts on the farm & a old washing machine motor. Mark lived a mile from our farm and came here often with his go-cart which would quit half way here most of the time. He was about 10 years old then. Mark was like a second son for my dad. Mark went with us to Expo 67 in Montreal Canada for a week. Great time for us all. He also helped me overhaul two tractors on the farm. Great memories! May you rest in peace my good friend. The Mormon Coulee Lions Club and the neighborhood will miss you alot. So sorry for your loss Michelle Schaefer family and Karen & Deb!
In response to "What always reminds you of Mark?"
Mark will always be watching over everyone and smiling down on you. His kindness, good natured, caring, loving gifts will be with the entire family forever. Be blessed that he touched us all in so many ways throughout his life. Thank you Mark. I will remember you.
Jeff
