Mark was one of the early founding members of the Colorado Full Size Jeep Association. He was with me when I went on one of my first 4 wheeling trips ever and was extremely patient with me as a new 4 wheeler and over the years was always generous with much need advice and much appreciate Jeep parts. Perhaps not generous enough, as the story goes that he had so many Jeep parts at one point that some fell through the ceiling in his home!

Despite the many Jeep trips, "wrench-o-thons" held at his home, and random runs to "Pull n Save" (local junkyard- er, automotive recycling center) what I remember most was his love for Heidi (his son was not born yet) and how he had no problem letting her "help daddy" fix the Jeep or rebuild an engine.

Heidi, you may have been too young to remember, but you were always welcome in Daddy's garage.

I am shocked and saddened. My prayers go out to all his family and friends. I will miss bantering with him on Facebook and reminiscing about Ludington and Redford HS.
I met mark in 1967 on the beach in Port Huron, mi. That started a life long friendship. The two of us and “row bottom” covered every inch of water in our two mile world between Bryce creek to the north and the vacant lot to the south. Row bottom was Marks greatest possession, a ”plywood and 1 by dingy” he and his grandfather built. We snorkeled, fished, found old wrecks & terrorized any wasp or hornets 🐝 nest we found. We always attacked by water and ran back, diving in and pulling row bottom behind us until it was safe to climb in.

Later it was girls & water skiing and the summers were filled with plenty of both. Mark was the better Skier.

When he got his license are fun became year round. Mark would visit, first in the datson with his Panasonic Super tuner and coaxial speakers. Then came the VW Sirocco. Thats the car that was stolen, found months later by the police and returned in better condition, having received tires, and a paint job.
Mark loved his family more then anything on this planet and never recovered from the divorce and separation from his children. He would call me repeatedly months in advance of of the kids visiting, lining up the availability of the boat and planning out there visits. This was the happiest I saw him in the later years.
I think the collage fund is an excellent idea. I’ll be in contact Bruce.

I had the privilege of meeting Mark in 1995 when we both worked at Marshall Industries in Thornton. Mark was unique and we became good friends shortly thereafter. Mark always had a great sense of humor and could laugh at himself when he made a mistake. Mark considered himself a student of World War II history and we spent many hours debating details of equipment, campaigns, strategies and outcomes. Mark and I did a lot of Jeeping together. Mark was always working to expand the group and meet new people. Mark had a great gift and making friends. After Marshall was bought by another company, Mark organized an annual Christmas Reunion for Marshall people and we are still meeting today over 20 years later. Mark was a very close friend of mine and brother in Christ. I always knew I could count on Mark's friendship is good times and bad. I will miss him greatly!

I wheeled quite a few trails with Mark. In the early days of our Jeep club we did some nutty stuff.

Mark was always ready to run trails with us in his trusty early 70s wag, like that time we ran the Teller County Carwash, a few years before the Hayman fire.

The river was flowing deep and we weren't sure if we wanted to try it. Half hearted dares were made and finally we said, what the heck. Mark had a winch after all. What could go wrong?

Mark and Larry were the guys wading in the Platte to guide us through. Half of us got stuck in water up to the top of our tires.

Mark came to the rescue with calming smiles and winched the stuck ones. With him around we knew we'd make it through and sure enough we did.

In 1998, Mark Holzhauer, Ethan, and I met up on the first trail run of what would soon become The Colorado Full Size Jeep Association. We ran many trails together over the years.

There's one trip I will always remember, Argentine Pass. It ended up being just the two of us and I jumped in his Toyota pickup at the mine and we drove up to the very top and had a pretty awesome conversation on the way.

Once we got up there the view was amazing. Before long a family of mountain goats came to check us out, moms and babies both. We were in petting distance but also within range of those sharp horns. So we just looked and they ambled on after awhile.

Of all the amazing experiences I've had in Colorado that one will always stand out. I cherish that experience and his friendship and think about it now and again 20 years later.

Always smiling, easy going, willing to help out with repairs or spare parts, and above all ready for an adventure. That's how I will always remember him.

Mark loved getting together with his family and friends. You have all be his joy. He has shared many story’s with me. His favorite place in the world was his grandpa’s in Port Huron, MI.
Mark was the fun uncle everyone wishes they had. I didnt see him much growing up since our families lived so far away. The times we did get together,he always found a way to make our visits to port huron fun and adventurous. I wish i had gotten to know him more on a friend to friend level like the rest of my family rather than just a kid being teased by his uncle.

Im going to miss him...

Buddies, attached to the hip, spending long carefree summer days together on Lake Huron. Formative years, filled with a sense of limitless potential. These are the memories I will always savior and hold closest to me, when thinking of my friend. It is difficult for me to describe the sense of loss, guilt and tragedy at this moment in time. Mark deserved better from us all, especially myself. Removed from seemingly limitless and unfair demands, my only hope is that he has now found the peace and solace he craved, and so richly deserves.
My sincere condolences to Jim, Christine, Kathryn, Heidi and Preston.

Mark & I disagreed on many things - we agreed on even more things. We shared a common beginning as young boys in NW Detroit. Mark is my friend....Ernie Sirois
I am crushed by this news... Mark was a great friend and brother and he will be dearly missed. I am praying for healing for his children and his family. :(
