Mark's obituary

Mark Bruce Eckell, 74, of Columbia, MD, passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2023, at Howard County General Hospital. Born March 9, 1948, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Sydney and Lenora (Kruger) Eckell.

Mark is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Loretta, his three sons Leon, Russ, and Ryan (Liz), and grandson Riley. He is also survived by his loving sister Barbara (Bill) Harvey, nephew David, niece Leigh Anne (Josh) Martorana, and two grand-nieces Olivia and Parker.

Mark earned his degree in history from West Chester University and spent his career working as a civil servant for various agencies of the federal government. Mark was an avid numismatist, the treasurer of the North American Jules Verne Society, and a volunteer at the Howard County Historical Society. He loved traveling to the Maritime provinces of Canada with his wife, taking in a good baseball game, watching old television and movies, bowling, and his cats. In his younger years, he enjoyed softball, golf, and the accordion.

In lieu of services, Mark will be remembered at a private celebration of life gathering in his honor. Memorial donations can be made to the North American Jules Verne Society via PayPal to NAJVSPay@gmail.com or to a charity of your choice.
