Marietta's obituary

Mrs. Marietta Arnett (Wilburn), age 85, of Alliance, Ohio, passed away peacefully on the evening of February 7, 2025, at Canterbury Villa of Alliance Skilled Nursing Facility after a lengthy yet courageous journey with Alzheimer’s disease.

Marietta was born June 17th, 1939, in Olive Hill, Kentucky, to her late parents Fairy Orene (McGlone) and Hascal Burns Wilburn. Marietta attended Olive Hill High School from Freshman through Junior year and played the Bass Drum in the Marching Band, was a cheerleader, and participated in the Drama Club. Marietta graduated high school through the Trevecca Nazarene College, class of 1957. For Senior Superlatives, she was voted “Most Athletic.” She was a member of the Girl’s Athletic Association—a group that hiked and played basketball, volleyball, and softball.

While studying at Trevecca Nazarene College, she met Hal Arnett, a fellow student. They married on September 12th, 1957, in Olive Hill, Kentucky. Marietta was a gifted beautician. She worked at Chevelle’s Salon in Canton, Ohio, and became their frosting specialist. She went on to work at the salon in JCPenney’s Carnation Mall and then at Cici’s Salon, both in Alliance, OH. She then operated a salon outside of their family home. Hal and Marietta worked side by side in their dairy and poultry business, which they operated on their various family farms. They also ran a home business, known as The Corner Garden, where they sold various plants and other goods she and Hal grew or created. Marietta had a shop at one end of the greenhouse where their business was operated, where she sold primitives and crockery. They also operated a Corner Garden booth at the Hartville Marketplace Flea Market, where Marietta sold pies, bread, and flowers, and then a second booth indoors where they sold items from their shop. When Marietta was not working or doing chores around the house or on the farm, she played the grand piano they had in their home. She was a skilled pianist and could transpose to different keys to accompany the range of a singer. She could play almost anything, but she loved to play hymns. She enjoyed sewing, and she had quite a green thumb. Her flowers were always beautiful. She was a kindhearted and loving friend to all animals, known to always be babying or petting something. She was also an avid Ohio State Buckeyes football fan.

Marietta was deeply dedicated to her family and took great pride in them. She was a beloved sister, devoted mother, cherished wife, and a loving Memaw, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Hal; sister Rosalie (Jim) McKenzie of Danville, KY; sister-in-law Marie Wilburn (Craft) of Olive Hill, KY; uncle Tom (Joan) McGlone of Frankfort, IN; sons Daniel Arnett of Bowling Green, OH; Matthew (Tiffany) Arnett of Galloway, OH; Thomas (Stephanie) Arnett of Alliance, OH; grandchildren Kaley, Aaron, Wyatt, Aiden, Trevor (Taylor), Ava, Matthew, Emily, Annaka, and Aliyah; great-grandchild Myla; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.

Marietta is preceded in death by her parents, Fairy Orene (McGlone) and Hascal Burns Wilburn, as well as her brother, Keith Herbert Wilburn.

Marietta was one of a kind, and she is missed by all who knew her.

A memorial service is being held on February 15th, 2025, from 2 pm to 4 pm at Dean’s Funeral Home (256 W Ohio Ave, Sebring, OH 44672). Friends and family are welcome to attend and celebrate Marietta’s life.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor can be made to The Alzheimer’s Association at go.osu.edu/marietta39 - The Alzheimer’s Association is a nonprofit organization that provides support, education, and resources for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease while funding research to find a cure.
