Maria's obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Maria Amparo Zapata, who departed this life on Wednesday, October 1st at the age of 90 surrounded by her family in Holland, MI. Born on March 9th, 1935 in Zacatecas, Mexico. Maria was a resilient and compassionate woman whose deep faith, care for those less fortunate, and unwavering spirit carried her gracefully through life’s ups and downs.

Maria’s family was her most prized possession. She treasured each family gathering over her famous dishes, rice, beans, and tamales, among others. Rarely missing a school function, sporting event, graduation, wedding, baby shower, or birthday celebration, she was always our constant. Her unconditional love and nurturing spirit made her not only a devoted mother and grandmother who instilled the values of kindness, perseverance, and empathy, but also a cherished friend to all who knew her. She lovingly cared for everyone she encountered during her time on Earth, often babysitting for families throughout the Holland community—treating each of them as if they were her own children.

Maria is survived by her children, Ester Zapata, Fred Zapata, and Amparo Printz; her loving grandchildren, Lakeyta Akridge, Lora Akridge, Samantha (Marshall Lotts) Zapata, Fred Zapata Jr., Christopher Nava, Dylan ZNava, Nathan (Lauren) Printz, Evan (Haley Bachman, fiancée) Printz; her beloved great-grandchildren, Julian Saunders, Keylanna Saunders, Peyton Keely, Milani Keely, Mikao Rodgers, Montez Rodgers, Marshall Lotts Jr., Leiana Lotts, Julius Zapata, Falon Jaggers, Ashleigh Durham, and Adalyn ZNava. She is also remembered by her brother, Uriel Zapata, and many nieces and nephews. Maria’s family also mourns the loss of those who have preceded her, including her parents, Maria Esther Robledo and Isidro Zapata, her daughter Teresa Arcos, and her brothers and sisters.

As we reflect on Maria’s life, we are left with lasting memories of her faith, resilience, and love. She touched countless lives through her generosity, thoughtfulness, and steadfast devotion to her family. Maria will forever remain in our hearts as a source of strength and inspiration—reminding us to live with kindness, persevere through life’s challenges, and keep faith at the center of all we do.

A visitation and memorial mass will be held on Thursday, October 16th at 10:30am at St. Francis de Sales Parish, 171 W 13th St, Holland, MI 49423
