Maria's obituary
Maria Victoria Miranda passed away unexpectedly on April 12, 2023. Our family was shocked and devastated with her lost to a heart attack. At the time of her passing she was 75 years old. Maria V. Miranda was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico to the parents Manuela Calderon and Manuel Miranda. Growing up she was known as "Maricusa" to everyone in town as they were always on the look out for all the mischievous actions this gorgeous little rebel would get into.
Maria had nine siblings. She had two sisters and seven brothers listed from the oldest to the youngest: Jose (Pepón), Miguel Angel (Mitchel), Rosalina (Rosa), Victor Manuel (Vitito), Agustin (Tinguito), Benito (Benny), Roberto, Mario (Mayo) and Frances. She is survived by four of her siblings Benito, Roberto, Mario and the youngest Frances.
Her family moved to NYC and lived at East Harlem where she married and had her one and only daughter Lillian. Lillian will be 55 years old this year and there is not a moment where she didn't feel ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
She then moved to Fulton Avenue in the Bronx where she was well known, embraced, respected and loved by everyone in the community. There was not a child in the community that did not know her. Her doors where literally always opened and children received candies or lollipops as they passed by her door. They also came to buy her Puerto Rican icee treats, known as Limbel, which came in all kinds of tropical fruit flavored for 50 cents a cup. When kids claimed not to have enough she will sell it to them for what ever they had. She babysat many and practically raised others. She loved to receive complements on how good her cooking smelled and would share a plate of food with any person that asked.
Her nieces and nephews renamed her "Titi China" and that is what everyone called her until she was blessed with her four grandchildren (Stephanie, John, Ricardo and Michael) who could not say "Mamita Maria" and ended up calling her "Mamia" which is what she is now known as to her three great-grandchildren (Elias, Emma and Ava) and too many of our closest friends.
Maria was less than five feet tall, had a very feisty attitude but had an enormous heart for everyone she met. She was filled with love, compassion and kindness. Mamia will be remembered for her warm smile, infectious laughter, and dedication to those she loved. Her love for life was evident in every interaction, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Maria's memory will live on through the lives of her family and friends who will forever cherish the time spent with her. Rest in peace, Maria, and may your legacy of love continue to inspire those left behind.
