Maria's obituary

Maria Lenz Ladd, potter, sculptor, peace advocate, and the wife of Edward Taylor Ladd, died on June 28, 2017, at Friend's House Retirement Community, where she lived, in Sandy Spring, Maryland. Maria Christina Barbara Lenz was born on a seed potato farm in the town of Wittkow, Germany (now, Witankowo, Poland), on December 3, 1925. After World War II, she met Edward Taylor Ladd, the son of William Palmer Ladd and Ailsie Taylor Ladd, who had their primary residence in New Haven, Connecticut, and spent their summers in Lancaster at the family home on High Street. Maria was working as a school teacher at the time she met Edward, and Edward was working for the U.S. on German reconstruction. They were married in Bremen in 1948. As they raised two children, Monica Ladd and Christopher W. P. Ladd, in Atlanta, Georgia, the Atlanta Ladds enjoyed countless summer vacations and Ladd family reunions in Lancaster, hiking, camping, and swimming in and around the White Mountains. Edward predeceased Maria on January 23, 1973. Maria's funeral service will be held at St. Paul's Church in Lancaster, on Sunday, July 1st, at 1:00 p.m., followed by the interment of her ashes next to those of her husband in the Ladd family plot at the Summer Street Cemetery. Survivors include Monica, Christopher, and four grandchildren.
