Background

It’s been seven years since we lost my mom, Mari J. Molseed, to lung cancer — and still, the impact of her life and the ache of her absence are deeply felt.

As we face celebrating another birthday without mom this Saturday, we’ve decided to do something that we’ve been discussing for years…we want honor mom’s memory in a way that reflects how she lived her life.

Mom was a force — an academic, activist, fierce feminist, deep thinker, and a woman who believed in the power of community.

Her cancer was misdiagnosed, and that early failure in her care cut short a life that had so much more to give. But she taught us — and so many others — that even when systems fail us, we can fight to make them better.

This fund is a beginning, created in her name to support the values that defined her life: education, compassion, and community.

The memorial fund will support:

Rural healthcare access, especially for those facing financial and geographic barriers

Family support during medical crises — for gas, lodging, food, and travel

Eventually, scholarships for students who embody her passion for justice, critical thinking, and care for others

It’s okay if you didn’t know her. And if you did, you know how lucky you were. Either way, if her story moves you, we’d be honored if you shared it.

Any little bit helps. That’s the point of all this — a little bit of community plants the seed for something bigger.
